“What is the pass word now?*’
“On to Macon, and down with
Auburn, of course!”
"Think you'll no?”
"Sure tiling! Noliody stays iu
Athens on Thanksgiving Day!”
< hir light, inexperienced team of
Iasi year heroically held Auburn's
crack squad from scoring until the
last three minutes of a long first half,
l.et's have all the scoring on our side
this time.
Coach llcisman very kindly re-
marks that the tieorgia team equals
his except in the one department of
receiving punts. The past week’s
practice should have eradicated this
weakness, and doubtless it has done
so.
Doctor Henry C. White is attend
ing the session of the Presidents of
Agricultural Colleges which is being
held in New Orleans. That body
will recommend to the Cniled States
government that it establish in Wash
ington a national school o! agiicult-
ure. No definite plans have yet
been suggested .is to the nrgani/a-
tion ol the proposed institution, hut
it might profitably he run somewhat
after the manner of the Naval School
at \nna|Milis, and the Military Acad
emy at West Point.
ARE YOU ONE, OR NOT?
Do you believe in Athletics in the
l'Diversity »• Georgia? Do you think
that it adds to the sum total of c ol
lege life, and that it helps to foster a
broad and necessary college spirit?
Aie you interested in football, and
wiil you welcome with pleasure the
opening of the baseball season?
There are about one hundred and
twenty live men in college who could
look one straight in the eye and an
swer without (hitching, the above
questions. The remaining two hun
dred and seventy five could not, and
even an attempt to do so would re
quire more "nerve 1 ' than we can
justly credit to the makeup of the
THE RED AND BLACK
ordinary mortal.
It is indeed a fact that, out of the
whole enrollment, only about one-
hundred and twenty-five men have
so far joined the Athletic Association.
No rule is broken by their failure to
do so, but a inoral obligation is tram
pled upon every time one allows
others to bear the whole expense of
a thing which benefits all alike, but
which has no claim upon the individ
ual pocket hook except through the
sense of justice of its owner.
There are men in college to whom
this does not apply. They are do
ing exc ellently well to maintain them
selves in college. Put it does apply,
and forc ibly, too, to those who 4 ‘blow
in’’ each week more than the one
dollar necessary for membership, and
who neglect, from tune to time, to
square themselves with the treasurer
purely through carelessness mixed
wi h a little selfishness.
In this connection, the old word,
"sponge,” will buoy up. l.ut it is an
unpleasant one, and we shall refrain
from using it here. Put beware of
this “something for nothing’’ policy,
and, above all, lork over your dollar!
Southern football.
It is therefore all important that
every stcj> be taken for the encour
agement of the present team, and
that a good foundation be laid now,
on which to build next fall.
Put the thing of most immediate
importance, is the winning of the An
burn game, for upon that depends
largely our rating for this season, and
our prospects for the next. So let’s
forget our defeats, make up our
minds that our team is a little strong
er than the crowd from Alabama, and j
go down to Macon Thanksgiving and >
prove it to the satisfaction of our
selves, and all others concerned!

“ON TO MACON AND
AN EVEN BREAK.”
This sheet of the Red and Plack
goes to press hvforc the beginning of
the Georgia ! kddonega football game.
For that reason, the game cannot
certainly be counted upon as a Geor
gia victory now, for “the best laid
plans of mice and men gang aft
aglee," and the mountain lads may,
by some unheard-of chance, gain the
decision.
Put that misfortune will hardly
come to pass, and it seems safe
enough at present, to consign the
scalp of the visiting team to an hon
ored place along with that of Mercer,
and (we hope) of Auburn.
This would score two victories and
three defeats to our credit, with the
glorious opportunity of making it an
even break by defeating Auburn on
Thanksgiving.
Now there are doubtless many root
ers who will not look upon this even
break, should we secure it, as the
acme of success tor our football team.
Put recalling the demoralization
which ruined our prospects on the
gridiron several years ago, it seems
to us a notable achievement that
Georgia should he represented this
year by a luma fide team which bids
fair to win half its games, and whic h
has already clearly placed itself in a
class with the best teams of the South,
\ Vainly excepted, of course.
Clemson and Davidson outpoint
1 us s ightly, while Tec h leads the
three by a small margin. So while
while we have found it impossible to
defeat any one ot these teams, we
have held each to a small score,
thereby w inning for ourselves an cas\
'place in their class.
So the most pessimistic supporter
of Georgia athletics can but admit
that while it has proved by no means
a banner season for us, yet the im
provement oxer last year and the
year before marks a positive stride
forward, which if followed up in
j will place us in the front rank ofj
