Brunswick, was elected vice-presi
dent.

Use of Ether as Anaesthetic Discovered
Through Use Similar to That of ISarcotics

Ether, now used to render patients
unconscious during operations, was
once used much as a narcotic or
alcoholic.
Dr. Crawford W. Long, alumnus of
the University and discoverer of the
use of ether us means of putting a
person through an operation minus
dreadful pain, related this fact him
self.
In speaking of what caused him
to use ether as it is now. Long said
that people took ether for the ex
hilarating properties it possessed.
Long himself took It. From personal
experience and from queries from
other users of ether he learned that
despite the fact that many hard
blows and falls were incurred during
the time people were under the effect
of ether none realized any pain.
Working on this theory Long final
ly administered his “under ether”
operation March 30, 1842, in Jeffer
son, Ga., seventeen miles from Ath
ens. It will he In this same town

Two University debaters will meet
a ebate team from The University
of North Carolina tonight in Phi
Kappa hall on the query Resolved:
That All Collective Bargaining
Should Be Carried on in Non-Com
pany Unions Safeguarded By Law,
G. G. Connelly, associate professor
of English, announced. The Georgia
debaters are D. B. Nicholson Jr. and
Tap Bennett Jr., both of Athens.
The Georgia men will uphold the
affirmative side in a non-decision
debate. Ten minute speeches by the
four debaters will be followed by one
five minute rebuttal from each side.
M. W. Bateman, Byron, and Wil
liam Durham, Woodville, represent
ed the University in a freshman in
ter-collegiate debate with The Uni
versity of Florida last night. Geor
gia upheld the negative side of the
question Resolved: That the Several
States Should Provide for Its Cit
izens, at a Nominal Cost, General
Medical Care and the Use of Hos
pitals and Clinics. No decision was
rendered.
The question of Social medicine
was discussed in a debate Wednes
day night between Georgia and Johns
Hopkins University, Baltimore. Ab
ner Willen and Sylvan Garfunkel
represented the Maryland university.
Colbert Hawkins, Monroe, and R.
dreaded removal due to the pain he
would suffer. Long told him of his
experience with ether, and also
those of others, and Venable agreed
to undergo such an operation.
Fresh from the campus of the
University of Pennsylvania, Long
performed the operation with his
amazing ability and used a towel to
apply the ether to his patient.
Frances Graham Named
Southern Dance Chairman
Miss Frances Graham, assistant
physical education professor at the
University, has been appointed dance
chairman of the Southern Physical
Education association, which will
meet in Atlanta next Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday.

College for Women, and North Caro
lina College for Women are among
the schools to be represented at the
convention held annually in central

H. Randolph, Winder, upholding the
negative side argued for the Uni
versity. Although no decision was
rendered at the conclusion of the
debate, the audience voted its disap
proval of Social Medicine.
Resolved: That the Nations Should
Agree to Prevent the International
I Shipment of Arms and Munitions,
was the topic for a varsity inter-col
legiate debate with The University of
Alabama Wednesday night at Phi
Kappa hall.
DuPree Hunnicutt, Athens, and
Jack Flynt, Griffin, upheld the af
firmative side in opposition to James
Caldwell and John Ansley of the
Alabama team.
Other varsity debates have been
scheduled for Emory university and
Bates college during April although
definite information was not avail
able. Freshman debates will prob
ably be held with Mercer and Ogle
thorpe in the near future.
