Dementia Praecox Claims the Flower
Of Our Youth, Valedictorians Succumb
Are you sane? Some individuals
cannot tell the difference between
j black and white. It Is the same with
i insanity, Dr. Newdigate Owensby,
! noted Atlanta psychiatrist, said in
, addressing the psychology clinic held
In the University chapel Wednesday
night. In which he discussed two
common types of mental disease,
dementia praecox and mania depres-
sla.
Dementia praecox, or adolescent
insnnlty (particularly applicable to
college students) occurs most fre
quently between the ages of 14 to
30. The mother’s boy or mother’s
girl are the ones most frequently af
fected.
Were you valedictorian or did you
make grades of 90 or above while
in high school? Have you begun
to slip since entering college or In
your later years In high school?
Perhaps you have dropped to grades
of 80 (this Is the first stage), or
maybe to grades of 4 0 and below
(this Is the second stage). If so, see
your psychiatrist Immediately, for
you have dementia praecox.
Sh-h! You have become Indiffer
ent, have lost Interest In your friends,
in books, in athletics (if you had
any other than tennis), In fact. In
all activities going on around you,
and have withdrawn Into a shell of
peaceful self absorption. You have
lost the ability to concentrate or
maybe you concentrate on the sun
—you sit and stare at It for several
hours. (This is a later stage, danger
Is Imminent.)
You have uncontrollable Impulses
—you who were once a congenial
fellow, may suddenly and In a most
nonchalant manner walk up to a
person whom you have been studying
and knock him down with one blow.
You do things like biting a dog’s
tail off, delight In torture, and think
so fast that in speaking 40 words
you mention 40 subjects. You do?
(Make room for one more at Mll-
ledgeville.)
Those who have symptoms are
comforted in the fact that 10 per
cent of those affected recover, and
also In the fact that savages have
never been known to have any form
of psychosis. The causes of demen
tia praecox lies In the early train
ing, certain taboos, sexual malad
justments, and other environmental
situations causing a type of Individ
ual known as the introvert.
