Institute Speaker Discusses
Conservation Needs of South
David E. Lilientha) Point*
Out Rapid Depletion of
Natural Resources
Two urgent needs fare people of
the South, David E. Lillcnthal, direc
tor of the Tennessee Valley Author
ity, told faculty members, students,
and guests at a meeting of the In
stitute of Public Affairs Thursday
night. These needs, he said, are the
increasing of income of people of
this region to provide a more secure
living for all, and the protection of
the South's natural resources.
“It is elementary, but worth con
stant repetition that ultimately the
Income of the South rests upon our
natural resources: upon our soil, up
on our minerals, our rivers and
streams and forests," he continued.
Our resources have been depleted by
the draining off of this natural
wealth. Only a small part of the
wealth created In the South Is left
there, he added.
As a cure for this economic 111
nf the South Mr Lllienthal offered
the establishing of a system under
which the raw materials of the South
would be manufactured here, rather
than shipped elsewhere for process
ing.

Come to
law Income Area
“So long as the South continues
to export most of Its raw products of
the farm or of the mine or of the
forest, It will continue to be an area
of low Income. No matter how care
fully we preserve the soil of our
fields, how carefully our lumbering
and mining operations are conduct
ed. unless the South Is able to pro
cess a substantial part of the raw
products it produces In this region,
It will continue to struggle ngalnst
almost overwhelming economic
odds."
Commenting on the effect Increas
ed Income In the South would hnvo
on other sections nf the country, Mr.
I.ilienthal said, "We cannot have a
sound national prosperity If any re

low Income. We have learned that
the well-being of every area of our

being of every other area."

He placed the Tcsponnlhllfty of

of a greater Income In the hands of
the people of Georgia and of the
South, calls for your leadership, you
whose roots are deep In the South,
who know Its people, dts hopes, its
ways of life. The demands of that
leadership will be heavy, but tho re
