Hodgson to Direct
Fine Arts Students
In Mascagni Opera
Opera will return to Athena and
the University in March, after an
absence of over five years, when the
division of line urts, under the direc
tion of Hugh Hodgson, presents the
first all-student operatic production,
Mascagni's "Cavalleria Kusticana."
Not since the summer of 1932,
when Helen Jepson and other pro
fessional singers appeared with stu
dents In Gounod's ''Faust,” has an
opera been attempted on the Uni
versity campus.
Choosing ‘‘Cavalleria” because of
Its lyrical music und universal ap
peal. Mr. Hodgson lias assembled a
small symphony orchestra and a
chorus of over a hundred students,
who will present the tragic Italian
tnle. Rased on the eternal triangle,
Mascagni's work is laid In a Sicilian
village, and concerns the loves, hates,
and Jealousies of the peasantry.
The performance of this one-act
opera will nflord a climax to musical
activity of the winter quarter which
has produced a serins of outstanding
events, including the appearances of
Grace Pavinl, soprano; Goya, Span
ish dancer; Minna Meeker, coloratura
soprano; Julian De Gray, concert
pianist; and the Rtradlvarlus Quar
tet which played three programs
during a two day festival sponsored
by the music department.
'Miss Irene 9 No Longer Arranges Dates
As Robot Takes Place of 'Number Please 9
“Miss Irene” Newcomb isn’t date-
maker for students any more.
When the snapping, cracking robot
telephone operator was installed In
the University exchange, progress
moved In with dial phones, automatic
selectors, connectors, line feeders and
bank terminals to take over the job.
“Miss Irene” now says, "Number
please?” and plugs in the Jacks for
Incoming calls at a brand new
switchboard over in a corner of the
room on the top floor of the Aca
demic Rullding where the robot lives.
She now handles only 4 60 calls dally.
I,.'too Calls Daily
Last fall four fraternities voted to
use the robot, and almost all dor
mitories and offices on Franklin, Co
ordinate and Ag Hill campuses have
felt the touch of this scientific pro
gress. Other Greek chapters will
consider Installing dial phones this
spring.
The 1,300 Inter-campus calls made
daily over these phones now go
through the robot switchboard.
How does the robot keep from
mixing them? Why does It give you
that busy buzz? How does that
roomful of stuttering, clicking ma
chinery instantly put Its "finger” on
the line you want when it is hidden
in hanks of wiring fixtures?
Only "Miss Irene” and W. A.
Troadaway, who is trouble shooter
for the telephone company, under
stand how the robot datemaker
works.
“Little rotary hunting fingers in
side selector boxes Jump up to the
notch indicated by the first number
you dial and then spin around until
ihey touch a clear line on that lever,”
Mr. Treadaway says.
"I’m Not tile Datemaker”
"That switches the call to the
proper connector box which will re
spond the same way to the second
and third number that is dialed. The
connector shifts the current toward
the proper phone and the automatic
ringer is cut in,” he says.
The operator is afraid to guess
how many dates are made through
the exchange, and she says although
“plugging Jacks Is a lot of fun, I
hope I'm not the datemaker.”
