Dr. Edwards Encourages 'Crammers';
States Ability to Cram is Valuable Asset
With the so-called thirst for know
ledge becoming almost unbearable as
the crucial exam period lurks only a
week ahead, students who have pre
viously tuken dubious pride in their
adeptness at ‘'cramming” may be
encouraged to know that it is a de
sirable virtue.
“Ability to cram,” states Dr. A. S.
Edwards, director of the psychology
department, “Is one of the most val
uable assets of life. To be able to
learn a large amount of material
quickly and accurately is necessary
for success In any Held."
Cramming is not the best means
of studying, Dr. Edwards neverthe
less pointed out, since the material
is less likely to be thoroughly un
derstood and loss permanent in the
memory.
The following rules, according to
Dr. Edwurds, should be followed by
students who take their cramming
seriously:
1. It your material consists purely
of memory work, study In fairly
short Intervals with frequent rest
periods.
2. If you are attempting to under
stand a problem or get the gist of a
great deal of material, you will profit
better by longer study periods, paus
ing for rest after you have com
pleted the thought of tho material.
3. Although complete abstinence
from food before taking un exam
will give that gnawing sensation, it
is not advisable to indulge in too
much food since this tends to result
in relaxation and sleepiness.
4. The quantity of sleep you may
need Is an individual problem, and
the particular time at which it is
taken In reference to the time of the
exam seems to have little effect on
the quality of the work you may do.
