After a heated debate Wednesday
night, Phi Kappa decided that Presi-
dent Itooneveit was Justified in his
roeont purge movement.
In voting the decision to the af-
tirmatlve the society at large vio
lated ith own conviction, us revealed
by a vote, on the question itself
which showed the members decis
ively opposed to the purge.
Al Morgan, Atlanta, speaking for
the affirmative, opened the debate.
"With so much vltul legislation be
fore Congress at present, it Is vital
that the majority—Democratic—
party present a united front," he
said.
Negative Hide (liven
Lending off for the negative side,
llowell Hollis, Columbus, compared
the senators of the purge to an auto
mobile governor, curtailing undesir
able speed. "II is not a purge," he
said, "but a dirge: a funeral dirge.'
He referred to "the death" of the
democratic government in the United
States.
Speaking without notes, and fresh
from his summer campaign in be-|
half of Lawrence Camp, Morris
Abram, lEltzgorald, seconded Mor
gan's stunfl. He attacked Hollis,
citing that President Wilson's let
ter to the people of (leorgla brought
about the defeat of candidate Hard
wick, and the election of his op
ponent.
"Roosevelt knew his cuuse won
doomed to defeat when he embarked
on his plan, but his courage and duty
caused liftn to see it through," Abram
shouted. Hu took his sent nmid ap
plause.
Solin Denounces Idealism
Louis Kohn, Atlanta, denounced
the "idealism" of Abram. He com
pared Koosovclt to ex-President Wil
son, prophesying the same disillu
sioned end for the New Deal leader
The rebuttal brought out the ora
torical abilities of Soho and Abram.
Their emotional attacks and counter
attacks brought applause from tho
audience.
It was announced that November
ft the society will hold tho freshman
prepared debate on the subject, Re
