Graduates Elected
Gets Endorsement
Of Demosthenians
Demos) limiian Literary Society en
dorsed the federal wage-hour bill
with its decision on a debate on the
subject Wednesday night.
Andrew Cain. Dnhloiiega, and Ron
ald Adams, llortense, successfully |
uphold the negative of the (|uery.
Resolved: That abolition of the fed
eral wage-hour bill would be to the |
best Interest of the South. Verner
Chaffin, Toccoa, and .lack Kent,
Rome, defended the affirmative.
Opening the nrgumcnt for the af
firmative. Chaffin claimed Hint Con
gress does not have the right to reg-
ulutc wages because It can pass only
civil luwx, not economic laws. “It
is an attempt by the North to make a
puppet of the South,” he said.
Cain, first negutive speaker, said
that $1 1 per week (26 cents per hour
for 44 hours, the minimum under
the law ) Is not too much for any
business to pny. lie ulso claimed
that the law will raise the stundard
of living in the South.
Kent, after informing the society
that lie hud prepared Ills dehute on
the wrong subject, explained that the
law will affect only a small percent
age of laborers in the South because
most of them fall in the classes ex
empted under the law. He con
demned the law because it does noth
ing for the “poor farmer.”
Concluding the debate, Adams, sec
ond negative speaker, claimed Hint
the hill will prevent exploitation of
Southern labor. lie further stated
Hint it will hel|i legitimate business
liy “eliminating cut-throat compet
itors who exploit cheap labor."
Rebuttals were given by Cain and
Kent.

Through such boards—located in 160 cities and towns—
already more than 11,000 subscribers to Teletypewriter
service are being interconnected.
Subscribers carry on 2-way typewritten communication
across the street or across the continent. Whatever is
typed on the sending machine is reproduced exactly, in
