night. He succeeds Carlisle Taylor,
Atlanta.
Fred Sweat. Waycross, was named
vice-president, and Andrew Gain.
Ilahlonega, wax rhosen chief Justice
of the Judidul council, hoth without
opposition.
Wickham, Adams Win
Fred Wickham, Columbus, defeat
ed DeWItt Ballew, Savannah, for
secretary, and Ronald Adams, llor-
tense, won over James Bridges,
Falrburn, for associate Justice of the
Judicial council.
Boh Norman, Washington, and re
tiring President Taylor were elected
to the offices of parliamentarian and
sergeant-at-arms, respectively. Both
were without opposition

ford Smith. Macon, for the office of
solicitor general.

University students like their
music sweet.
Kay Kyser took top honors as the
favorite band in a poll of 560 stu
dents conducted by Willett M. Kemp-
ton, professor In the Henry W. CJrady
School of Journalism. The voters
t ranked their ten favorite bands In
order of preference.
Tommy Dorsey ran a close second,
with Benny (ioodman, (lay Lombar
do, Wayne King, Jan Garber, Paul
Whiteman, Hal Kemp, Horace Heldt,
and Glen Gray tilling the next eight
j places, respectively.
With the exception of Benny Good
man, who received less than one-
J half us many votes as Kyser, sweet
' music was heavily favored by the
students, despite the popularity of
swing and swing hands throughout
the country and the fact that swing
music originated In the South.
Negro bunds, as Duke Ellington.
Gab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, and
Fats Waller, once so popular, are
not favored by today's dance en
thusiasts. None received more nods
[ of upprovul than the students own
I "Bulldogs,” an organization of Uni
versity musicians.
Favorites of a few years ago, such
as Ray Noble, Artie Shaw, Eddie
Duchin, Blue Barron, Ben Bernie,
and Ted Weems, received little if
any recognition.
Jimmy Dorsey, who played for the
University’s Homecoming dances on
Thanksgiving week-end, was the
third choice of many.
Two of the ten top ranking hands,
Kay Kyser and Glen Gray, have
played for University dances. Other
hands favored by the students who
have played for dances at the Uni
versity are Vincent Lopez and Fran
cis Craig.
Gaffuu Club Elects Officers;
Spinks Is Named President

president of Gaffau Club, organiza
tion for vocational education majors
to succeed James Cooley, Cleveland,
at a regular meeting Wednesday
night In Conner Hall.
Other officers elected are Ralph
Catlett, Commerce, vice-president;
Guy Johnson, Cusseta, secretary;
Dewey Meaders, Sylvester, treasur
er; Bill Adams, Dewey Rose, report
er, and D. L. Stephens, Sylvester,
parliamentarian.
ROTC Head Views
Drill of Entire Unit
The University ROTC unit re
ceived its first inspection of the year
this morning at 10:30 when Col. H.
R, Richmond, head of the Reserve
Officer’s Training Corps in the fourth
corps area, informally reviewed the
Infantry and Cavalry regiments.
No special performance or drill
was given. Instead, the Cavalry of
ficer watched the two organizations
perform their routine weekly work.
A formal review was held Wed
nesday morning in honor of Harmon
W. Caldwell, president of the Uni
versity, when the entire military
unit Btaged a parade under the com
mand of Cadet Col. Floyd Newton,
Madison. Col. H. E. Mann stood
with the president in the reviewing
stand, located on the military drill
field.
Installation of all new officers was
held Immediately following the elec
tion.
Henderson's Honors
A senior in the Lumpkin Law
School, Henderson, the new presi
dent, holds the office of chief Justice
of the Honor Council of the law
school, highest honor In that school,
lie is a member of Sigma Del-
tu Kappa legal fraternity, Pert-
cleans, ami Phi Kappa I’hl scholar
ship fraternity. Il» Is a staff mem
ber of the Georgia Bur Journal, se
lected on u basis of scholarship. He
served as thief Justice of the judicial
council of Demosthenlun during the
fall quarter.
In his inaugural address, Hender
son cited the fuel that Demosthenes
died for his convictions and urged
members of the society to he true
to their convictions, emphasizing
not the superficial hut the Important
things in life.
He mentioned tho opportunities of
making friends within the society

169th district of Rotary Internation
al, during the Christmas recess.
The students include Joachim
Hein Germany; Luise Boehme,
Germany; Patric Hovelacque, France,
and Bruno Mandelli, Italy. They
will visit several clubs in an attempt
to receive better understanding of
life in the South.
They will visit Hartwell, Elberton,
Savannah, Augusta, Milledgevile,
and other towns.
