See Home Games in '38
Georgia's Bulldogs played be
fore 40,176 fans in four games in
Sanford Stadium during the past
season, the 6 2 per cent Increase
over the 26,385 who witnessed
home tilts last year being largely
due to the 23,000 attendance at
the Tech game.
This reflects the attendance at
football games throughout the na
tion. An Associated Press survey
recently showed the national In
crease to be li per cent. The
23,264 attendance at the Tech
game larked nearly 10,000 of
equaling the record for Sanford
Stadium, set in 1931 when Tulane
Invaded Athens.
Candler Hull Eleven Beals
Old College in Annual Game
Ouly 31,500 short of being full,
Sanford Stadium Saturday was the
scene of Georgia's annual "Dormitory
Howl" game which Candler Hall won
from Old College, 20-0.
Touchdowns were scored by "Red"
Martin and Jack Mercer, while the
third score, made on an 87-yard
dash by Archie Williams, wag dis
puted.
"Dean Will” Thurmond, Candler
Hall’s janitor and water boy, showed
the feminine spectators the latest
modes of "Susie Q-ing” In the Bar
on’s mass parade at half-time.
Christmas holidays will mean lit
tle to members of Georgia's basket
ball squad this year, as Coach Elmer
Lampe's charges will spend all but
five days of the vacation period prac-1
ticing for their opening game of the ,
1939 season against South Carolina I
in Woodruff Hall Jan. 3.
Following examinations the Bull
dog cagers will practice through Dec.
22, and will return to Athens Dec.
27 to resume drills for the Gamecock
battle.
"Our big problem right now is to
work out a winning combination,"
Lampe said Wednesday. "We'll need
all the practice we can get before
the season starts, and we will prob
ably he far into the season before
we can find out what kind of a team
we'll have.’’
With only three lettermen back
this year, Lampe is faced with the
possibility of a green sophomore
team. Captain Cecil Kelly and Alex
McCaskill at forward, and Knox El-
dredge at guard, are the three vet
erans from last year’s team. Coot
Vandiver, southpaw’ forward, who
was out all last year because of an
old football injury, is expected to
bolster the 1939 team.
Kelly and Vandiver have been
running at forwards this week on
Lampe’s tentative first string five,
with Joe Killian, Roy Chatham, and
Frankie Rentz alternating at guard
positions. Dan Kirkland and Morris
McDonald are the outstanding candi
dates for the center berth. McCas
kill, Eldredge, James Skipworth, and
John Stegeman will join the basket
ball squad Monday after a week of
rest from football.
