A dp* device railed the "finger
tromometer," Invented by Dr. A. 8. |
KdwardH, head of the psychology de
partment, Is now being used In ex
periments conducted by the psycholo
gy department In Meigs Hall.
Tho tromometer Is designed to
gauge the amount of nervous tension
In a person under various conditions.
'I ne apparatus was described by Dr.
Edwards In a report published In
the American Journal of Psychology.
It Is the only known device for test
ing finger tremor.
The tromometer makes a three-
dlmenslonnl measurement of finger
movement. To make the tests, three
cords are attached to the subject's
middle finger and are hold taut by
the tromometer for 30 seconds while
tho subject holds his arm extended.
Movements of the hnnd In any di
rection, and finger tremors, are re
corded on a scale.
In the Journal article, tables and
charts reveal the tremors of various
age groups, and of men and women

Coach Butts . . .
(Continued from page nine)
a note of thla priceless line, for It
gives a pretty good insight Into Butts’
coaching philosophy, which like h!s
speech and manner. Is amazingly
simple and forthright. Trademarks
of Butts-coached teams are scythe
like blocking, clean but hard tack
ling, 60-mlnute durability, highly
original pass patterns and a system
for kicking the extra point that must
be the nearest thing to mechanical
in a man-made game. ,
Wally has figured out that if they
are going to keep this pestiferous di
git in the football scoring scheme,
one might as well have an expert
working on It. So he has created a
sort of "12th” man out of extra
point specialists Leo Costa and
George Jernigan, who contributed
more than 100 points each to Geor
gia teams, although they averaged
less than a minute a year of play
ing time.
Offense Unlimited
Georgia teams carry an amazing
amount of offense. A Bulldog quar
terback must be a mental, as well
as a physical marvel, who must re
member approximately 200 basic
pass and running plays—with many
other variations—and be able to pull
the right one out of the bag In the
clutch. Tho result is that Georgia’s
attack is highly varied.
Georgia teams throw an average
of 28 to 30 passes a game, which Is
about the average of the Southwest
Conference, the nation’s most pass-
minded league. Butts Is recognized
as an accomplished pass-master and
such top-drawer coaches as Frank
Leahy of Notre Dame and Frank
Thomas of Alabama frequently ask
Wally to design a pet pass for them.

Counselors Wanted
For Summer Jobs
’’Girls who expect to work during
the summer as camp counselors will
get a greater choice If they apply at
the present time,” states Miss Mar
garet Stanlon, physical education In
structor in the College of Education.
Miss Stanion points out that she
has already received many calls for
girls who would be interested in
serving as counselors in sports, hand
crafts, folk games, and journalism.
This trend Is indicative that this will
be a “big camping year,” she be
lieves.
A camp counselor training course,
designed to qualify girls for these
positions, is offered by the physical
education department.

SANDWICHES
It Ik probably as a conditioner of
men that Butts shines brightest.
When the boys on the opposing team
are yearning for game's end and
such things as a hot shower, a hot
supper or an interesting date, Wally’s
lads are just getting up steam for the
finish. Butts has the old-fashioned
Idea that football teams, like boxers
and race horses, can win on superior
condition, if nothing else.
As a result of this theory, Georgia
players are legged up gradually like
race horses and come from behind to
win almost as often as Whirlaway
did. Georgia players dash on and off
the field In three seconds. They do
not lie down during time outs and
they do not drink any water during
a game. "When Coach Butts puts a
player on the field, he is all player,”
observed Clegg Stark, who was the
Bulldogs' water boy until Butts
came along and abolished the water
bucket. Now Clegg just fans the boys
with a towel during time outs.
Georgia teams have three simple
training rules. They are not allow
ed to drink or smoke, must be In bed
by 11 p. m. and must not appear at
dinner—either at home or on the
road—without coats and ties. Butts,
so far as It is known, has contrib
uted only one motto to college foot
ball and It Is by way of being a minor
classic. "Ole Georgia can be beat,”
he tells his boys, “but not by players
who drink and smoke."
