THE RED AND BLACK. FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 1947.
Philosopher Sips Ilis Coffee,
Recounts Pales of Other Daj s
lly Jnrk Levy
Dr. Irwin Ed man, popular lecturer
and phtloHopher, appeared on the
rumpus thin week under the auspices
of the commlttoe on apeclal convo
cations.
On being Interview at his hotel.
Dr. Kdman remarked, "1 can talk
much better over a cup of coffee.
Let's have a cup.
Musing over a cup of coffee, ho
related that on one occasion while
In his offlco at Columbia University,
a young fellow timidly walked in and
snld:
“Dr. Edman, I’m being Initiated
Into a fraternity and I must have a
limerick written by you.”
“Well, sit down in the corner,
son, and I'll be with you In a mom
ent.”
In exnctly three minutes. Dr. Ed
man handled this verso to the boy:
A youth who was pledged to a frat
Did not quite know where ho was at,
(let some verses by Edmnn
Or, they said, you’re a dend man
And the nincompoop got them at
that.
"I enjoy teaching at Columbia, but
It Is comparablo to an actor who
says he enjoys acting but likes his
nights off hotter,’’ confesses tho phi
losopher.
"You know, I trnvelod in many
foreign countries before tho war and
tried to lenrn tho lnnguage of oach
country I visited. I have trained my
self to Imitate the dlnlect nnd accent
of tho person with whom I am con
versing.” For the remainder of the
Interview, Dr. Edmnn spoke In n
Southern drawl—much to my dls-
mny.
“One of my biggest disappoint
ments Is that I learned to speak
Portugese and I haven’t found any
one to talk „wlth me.”
Philosopher Edman Is at present
writing a sequel to Ills latest book,
"A Philosopher’s Holiday.” Ho said
this one Ib to be called, “A Philoso
pher's Quest.” One reason for the
apparent popularity of Dr. Edman's
books is that he has been able to
reach the masses.
It Is obvious that Dr. Edman dons
not udbere to tho traditional defi
nition of philosophy—“Saying things
(hut everybody knows in language
that no one understands.”
The popular lecturer named five
books that every college student
should read. After stroking his hair,
ho named tho following books from
the world's best literature: Plato's
“Republic,” John Stuart Mill's “On
Liberty,” “Moliy Dick” by Herman
Melville, one complete volume of
Shakespeare, and Homer's "Odys
sey.” He couldn't decide on his favo
rite book
As we finished our coffee, Dr. Ed-
man was extended an Invitation to
have dinner ut the fraternity house.
Ho looked nt his watch and Jumped
up, exclaiming that he Just had time
to make an appointment for dinner
with some faculty members.
With characteristic tongue-in-
cheek, he whispered, “I'd rather,
have dlnnor with you boys, though!”

Sherman Discloses
Chartering of AVC
| The University chapter of the
American Veterans Committee, char
tered last week, has become active
1 under the bylaws and constitution
of the organization, Wesley Sherman,
Richmond Hill, chairman of the
group said today. The campus group,
designated as national chapter No.
867, received Its charter at a meeting
last Thursday In the Journalism
reading room.
Sherman stated that AVC Is run
: by individual chapters and not by
| the national headquarters of the
group. He explained that affairs on !
a national level are handled by a
24-man national planning committee
made up of 16 members elected at
large and eight members elected In
regional caucuses by the eight re- j
gions into which the nation Is divided
for administrative purposes and rep
resentation. Each chapter determines
Its own policy as long as that policy
Is in accord with the preamble to
tho constitution, which each member
signs when he Joins the AVC, the
chairman pointed out.
Plans were discussed for local
promotion supporting a bill to pro
vide for increased subsistence al
lowance to veterans attending school.
The bill will propose that the present
allowance of $65 and $90 a month be
raised to $100 for the single student
and $125 for the married veteran,
with an additional $10 a month for
each child. This bill Is being sup
ported by the AVC along with other
veterans' organizations, according to
Sherman.
The group will meet next Thurs
day, at 4:30 p. m. In the Commerce-
Journalism Auditorium, Sherman j
announced.
