UNIVERSITY CHAPEL
Historic Building Badly Used by Yankee Soldiers
CAMPUS BUILDINGS
University Chapel Survives
Abuses of Federal Soldiers
By Gene Harper
The University Chapel was erected on the sight of the old chapel
in 1832 and was considered at that time one of the most beautiful
buildings in the South.
ROTC Rifle Team
\\ ins Third Place
In National Contest
The Army ROTC rifle team won
third place in the 34 th annual Wil
liam Randolph Hearst National
ROTC Rifle Competition for Third
Army Units, University officials were
notified this week.
The rifle meet was held in Decem
ber at the University and targets
were •mailed into Third Army head
quarters at Fort McPherson, Atlanta.
This year's team is an all-sopho-
more squad and it is the second
straight year ROTC riflers have plac
ed third in the meet.
Lucius H. Edmondson, Decatur,
was high scorer, getting 190 of the
possible 200 points.
Other members of the team are
William G. Stewart, Atlanta; James
Pirkle, Augusta; Edward C. Long,
Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Edward H.
Riddle, Augusta.
After the War for Southern Inde
pendence, Yankee soldiers who were
quartered on the campus, badly used
the chapel. The benches were burn
ed, windows broken, walls jabbed
with bayonets, and the columns used
as targets for rifle practice.
Originally there was a cupola hous
ing the bell on the roof, but the bell
is now housed in a separate tower in
the rear. The bell is still in use for
classes and rings until midnight fol-
iwoing University football victories.
A picture depicting an interior
view of St. Peter's Cathedral at Rome
dominates the chapel and is the larg
est mounted painting in the world. It
was presented to the University in
1867 by David Pratt, in tribute to his
friendship for Chancellor Andrew
Lipscomb. The painting is 17 feet
high, over 23 feet long, and weighs
more than a ton. It was necessary
to remove the rear of the chapel be
fore it could be installed.
Since that time the building has
seen little alteration except the in
stallation of a $10,000 pipe organ.
In the 1930s the painting began to
deteriorate rapidly and an expert was
sought to restore it. In 1936, the con
tract for restroing and remounting
painting was let to P. H. Boungar-
tin. He found a large part of the
canvas had been rolled up under the
frame and 40 additional square feet
are now vlsable. Boungartin stated
that $100,000 would be a conserva
tive estimate of the painting's value.
The chapel fire in early February
of this year damaged the painting,
and for the second time in the past
twenty years the painting will be re
stored.
Because of its history and beauty,
the chapel holds a wealth of attrac
tion for students. It was suggested
to the class of 1933 that they had
outgrown the building and that it
would be better for the baccalaureate
sermon to be preached in a larger
auditorium.
They protested that they wanted
to sit where most of the hundred oth
er classes had heard their sermons
since the construction of the chapel
in 1832.
