Dorm Switchboard Operators
Receive Variety of Messages
Since Alexander Graham Bell spun the crank on the first telephone,
the lines have hummed with choice bits of gossip, high-level con
spiracy, low-level conniving, and—as is sometimes the case in calls
to the University dorms—high-strung lunacy.

operators at Myera
are showered nightly with calls from
boys who want sight-unseen dates,
or who merely wish to hold a friendly
chat with the girl at the board.
Calls for dates are not confined
solely to women’s dorms as Reed
Hall operators are ready to attest.
One Reed switchboard man reported
that a Myers girl called up one night
asking for a date—just any boy so
long as he was reasonably tall. The
girl gave a name along with the time
and place for the date to meet her,
then hung up.
Always displaying an Interest in
female callers, the switchboard op
erator called back only to find that
the girl whose name was given was
out. Suspecting a practical joke and
not wishing to be an Inactive party
in it, the boy called the girl’s room
mate Aid described a handsome
young man who, she was to tell her
friend, wanted a dato that night.
The roommate agreed to collab
orate and the Reed operator is still
wondering how long the girl waited
for her imaginary date.

Alpha Delta Sigma
Designs Ad Spread
The two page spread of advertise
ments that appeared in last week’s
edition of The Red and Black was
sponsored by Alpha Delta Sigma, na
tional professional advertising fra
ternity.
The project was designed to give
Alpha Delta Sigma members practl
cal experience in soliciting advertise
ments, writing advertising copy and
advertisement lay-outs.
The Red and Black advertising
staff worked in conjunction with the
fraternity on the project. The double
page lay-out was labeled “Campus
Thrift Days” and consisted of adver
tisements from Athens merchants.
Advertisements on the two pages
were to encourage students to pur
chase goods through premiums, cou
pons and cut rates.
