Alumni Set $1,000,000 Goal
For Foundation Contributions
University alumni are digging into their pockets and rallying to
ward a goal this year—$1,000,000 in contributions to the University
of Georgia Foundation by’June 6, Alumni Day, according to Alumni
Secretary William M. Crane.
Over 7,000 alumni chipped in last
year to add a record-breaking $95,-
000 to the fund which has grown
from $4,500 in 1937 when it was
begun to approximately $975,000 at
present. This leaves the former
graduates with an estimated $2 5,-
000 balance to make up before June
if the goal is to be reached.
In addition to financing various
awards, research and other services,
Crane said, the foundation fund takes
care of emergency financial needs.
Often a gift is donated to the Uni
versity stipulating that it must be
matched by a school. No where else
can money be obtained to fulfill such
requirements outside the foundation
fund. The foundation has thus far
saved the University thousands of
dollars in gift donations in the past.
The University of Georgia Foun
dation has also had a hand in agri
cultural research, results of which
now add at least $35,000,000 annual
ly to the income of the people of
Georgia.
Alumni enthusiasm for the foun
dation is evident by the fact that
103 members now belong to the
“Century Club,” an honorary group
whose membership is limited to those
who have contributed $100 or more
to the fund.
The University Alumni Society,
which was formed in 1944-45, has
worked hand in hand with the foun
dation toward improving University
facilities. Contributions are solicited
from grads both inside and outside
the state of Georgia and the society
has set its sights on the mark of
300 Century Club members in the
1954-55 fiscal year.
With this large sum of money,
the University’s alumni hope to add
more prestige and competency to the
University’s far-flung facilities so
that the members’ contributions can
live up to their slogan: “Give the
gift that keeps on giving.”
Glee Club Makes 45th Tour
The University Men’s Glee Club,
directed by Byron Warner, has been
on its 45th annual spring tour.
The Glee Club has toured Georgia
and will return to Athens this week
end. The club will perform in a few
other places next week and will com
plete its tour April 21 with a per
formance in Athens.
