to two University physicians and a psychologist.
Forestry Seminar
Planned Monday;
Jenkins To Speak
A seminar on “Research on a
Field Method of Capturing Deer
Using Drugs” will open at 7:30
p.m. Monday at the School of
Forestry.
Dr. James H. Jenkins, forestry
professor, will present a research
paper prepared by himself, Dr. S. D.
Feurt, pharmacy associate professor.
Dr. T. W. Hayes, veterinary medicine
lab assistant, and J. A. Crockford of
the Georgia Game and Fisheries com
mission.
About 25 students, faculty mem
bers and guests are expected to par
ticipate in the seminar.
Dr. Jenkins last week presented
the research work at a meeting of
the Southeast Section of Wildlife So
ciety at Daytona Beach, Fla. He was
elected president of the group.
The papers concern the capture of
deer through use of harmless drugs.
Deer captured in this manner are
then moved from areas of dense deer
population to areas where deer are
scarce.

Dr. Hudson Jost, psychology de
partment head, Dr. J. H. Robbins,
Infirmary director, and Dr. M. A.
Hubert, team phsyician, have been
conducting a series of tests designed
to show the minimal brain damage
among football players at Georgia.
They found damage to be Just sev
en per cent, compared to almost 16
percent in a representative group of
other normal adults.
Brain Wave Tracing
Tests include a short tracing of
the brain waves of the subject
through the use of a complex machine
known as the electroenecphalograph
—or EEG for short. The EEG ma
chine records the impulses from the
brain and transmits impulses to pa
per in graph form.
The subject lies on a padded table
near the EEG machine and about 10
electrodes are attached with a special
paste to the areas of the head which
are approximately at the Important
functional parts of the brain. He Is
told to breathe hard and fast for
about two minutes. The brain waves
are then transferred to the paper.
Time Test Required
A routine test requires only about
an hour but if a brain injury or tu
mor is to be localized, the process
could take as long as two or three
hours.
If a player receives a head injury
later, he receives another EEG test
and the result is compared with the
original test to determine the extent
of the injury.
In this way, the doctors learn
whether or not a player has received
enough head injuries in his pre-col
lege playing to cause minimal dam
age.
The program was instituted with
view toward permanency. When
Georgia players report to Athens in
the fall, a short tracing by the EEG
machine will bo a regular part of
their checking-in procedure.
