Portrait Unveiling
In Reed’s Memory
Planned Saturday
The late Thomas \V. Reed will
be honored with a memorial ser
vice which will feature the unveil
ing of a portrait in Reed Hall Sat
urday at 12:1a p.m.
The portrait, painted by Jean Flan
igan, will be hung in the lobby with
a bronze plaque underneath.
Invocation by the Rev. E. W.
Hill, former pastor of the Athens
Presbyterian Church, will open the
ceremony. Uncle Tom’s portrait will
be unveiled by a member of his fam
ily. J. D. Bolton, University comp
troller, will present the portrait to
the University, and a Reed Hall Coun
cil member will present the plaque.
Dean of Men William Tate will ac
cept the portrait and plaque for the
University. A representative of Phi
Delta Theta, Reed’s social fraternity
will honor Reed. Bill McCrown, ar-
ginaut chaplain, will close the cere
mony with a prayer.
Reed Hall Council bought the
plaque and had it installed under
auspices of the University Commit
tee on Memorials.

The Dairy Products Judging
team, coached by Dr. John J.
Sheuring, took first place in all
products and ice cream judging
in regional competition at Co
lumbia, Mo., last weekend.
The team placed second In the
milk division. The three-man
Irani moved on to national com
petition this week. Members are
Walter Verity Jr., Bayside, N.
Y.; Harold Kimball, Fitzgerald,
and Oakley Hayden, Jamaica.

ent locations.
The future location will be the
first time there has been a perma
nent place designed for anthropolo
gy collections and laboratories at the
University, Dr. Arthur Kelly, an
thropology department head, said
this week.
Work began on the project two
weeks ago and is expected to be com
pleted in another two weeks, B. C.
Kinny, plant operations head, said.
The new location will consist of
laboratories, a classroom and space
to store collections.
After collections and equipment
have been removed from the Museum
of Arts basement, It will be remodel
ed and used as an extension of the
museum.
The Old College basement also will
be remodeled and turned into class
rooms.

sional journalistic fraternity.
A 1931 graduate of the School of
Journalism, Carlton is a former edi
tor of The Red and Black and presi
dent of Sigma Delta Chi. He Is cur
rently active in the Washington pro
fessional chapter of Sigma Delta Chi
and the National Press Club.
From December, 1951 to May,
1955 he was administrative assistant
to Senator Smathers of Florida and
is currently executive secretary to
Sen. Walter F. George.
He was active at the 1952 National
Democratic Convention on the staff
of Sen. Richard B. Russell. Carlton
has covered the White House and has
been a member of the Congressional
Standing Committee of Correspond
ents.

Registration Deadlines Set
Student Union’s fall quarter ping
pong and billiards tournaments for
men and women will begin Nov. 7
and Nov. 14, Jim Hart, Union games
chairman, said Monday.
Registration deadline for the ping
pong tournament is Nov. 2, and the
registration deadline for the billiards
tournament is Nov. 9.
Medals will he awarded to first
and second place winners In all cate
gories.
