The tallest Georgia freshman
team in history took to the hard
woods Tuesday, beginning work
outs for what promises to be an
interesting squad.
These giants are comprised of five
Georgia hoys and one Alabaman.
The Georgia group includes centers
Haywood Hobgood, 6'8", Bill Bold
Ing and Bob McCoy, both of whom
stand 6'6" and 6'5" forwards Sonny
Poss and Robert Burrows. Out of
stater Leonard Moen, 6'6", center
rounds out the list of big men. Coach
“Red” Lawson commented that the
I big men need polishing but that the
I potential is there.
Athens offers three aspiring year-
ings in Don Mathews, 6'2", forward
and guard; Dallas Tarkenton, 6'V r ,
forward and Dick Carteaux, 5'9",
guard.
Other candidates that fall into the
forwards’ category are Joe DeFoor,
G'2", and “Red” Black, 6'2". Ted
Denny, 6'2" and Douglas Link, 6'1"
can go at either forward or guard
and like DeFoor gained their basket-
hall apprenticeship while attending
Georgia high schools.
Bill Smother, 6' guard halls from
Alabama and two hopeful cagemen
jPhil Weber, 5'10" and ex-Navy hoop-
ster Ed Ingles, 6'11", guards have
come south from Long Island, N. Y.
to try their luck with the Bullpup
“Hve.”
JIMMY HARPER, GEORGIA QUARTERBACK, picks up 11 yards on
u quarterback keep play In Saturday’s Homecoming game with Ala
bama before being stopped by Tide guard Max Kelly (00). Harper
gained 60 yards running and passed for 45 more.
SEC ROUNDUP
Auburn Upset by Greenies;
Kentucky Fells Rice Owls
Tn the big SEC game of the week, Tulane upset stunned Auburn,
27-13, proving that last week’s victory over Georgia was no fluke.
Auburn couldn’t get their sputter- Penalized 110 yards to Tulane’s
Ing offense clicking until the last
period, and by then the Greenies had
built up a 21-point lead.

ball also was Auburn’s undoing. One
of Tulane’s touchdowns came on an

other was set up by an Auburn fum

Hardy Leads Cats
In a game which saw the lead
change six times, Kentucky called on,
once again, the running and pitching
of Bob Hardy, who in the last four
minutes of the game, after directing
his mates up the field on a 6G-yard
scoring drive, scooted the last
yards around end to give the Wild
cats a 20-16 victory over the Rice
Owls.
At Grant Field Georgia Tech beat
a highly rated Duke eleven 27-0.
George Volket set up the Engineer’s
first touchdown and scored the sec
ond on a 23-yard run. Volkert’s total
yardage for the afternoon was only
14 yards less than Duke’s bottled up
offensive total of 133 yards.
LSU Too Late
LSU came up with two touch
downs in the last six minutes and was
driving for a third when the clock
ran out giving Ole Miss a 29-26 vic
tory over the Tigers.
Eagle Day, Ole Miss’ quarterback,
tossed for two touchdowns and set
up the other two scores and a field
goal with his accurate passing.
In two non-conference games, Ten
nessee handed North Carolina their
worst licking in ten years 48-7 and
sophomore Willie Morgan, substitut
ing* for injured all-SEC halfback Art
Davis, proved too much for North
Texas State in their 20-7 loss to Mis
sissippi State.
