mansion.” The old colonial structure at 599 Prince avenue, built 123 years

University Coeds Learn Techniques
Of Housekeeping at Campus Homes
By Mildred Sparks
Managing a home may seem like a very normal task for a young woman, but sharing the correct and
efficient management of it home with seven girls who are all attending classes is a pretty big order.
It Is also a very enjoyable one,
according to the girls living in the
three home management houses on
the campus. The houses are eight-
room, two-story brick structures,
furnished like any middle class home
might be.
Required Course
The home management course is
required of every girl who gradu
ates from the School of Home Eco
nomics. It is taken during her jun
ior or senior year after she has had
all of the fundamental courses Of
homemaking. She receives three
hours academic credit plus three
more hours for the lectures which
accompany it, allowing her to take
as much as 10 hours of academic
work while living there.
The girls work out their menus
on the basis of $.90 to $1.00 per per
son per day, to buy the groceries
and to prepare and serve the food.
They follow a strict budget, keep de
tailed accounts, and balanced books
Five Duties
The live major duties are that of
cook, homemaker, baker, waitress
and housekeeper, which are rotated
so that each girl gets to try her hand
at each during the quarter.
Each house has a director' who
helps to make the housework run
like clockwork. Miss Matilda Calla
way, director of Home Management
House ”B,” has been living in home
management houses for 16 years, and
reports that a burned finger is as
serious an accident that usually oc
curs. She says that standard methods
and recipes, plus the girls’ previous
training in their classes, prevents
charred or unpalatable food.
