CAPTURED BY DARTS
Dr. Frank A. Hayes Examines Captive Deer
New Dart-Shooting Technique
For Deer Hunting Developed
Cooperation between three
Game and Fish Commission has
deer-hunting.
A method for capturing deer by
using dart-shooting air guns has
been discovered by Dr. James H.
Jenkins, wildlife management head,
School of Forestry; Dr. Seldon D.
Feurt, pharmacy professor; Dr.
Frank A. Hayes, School of Veteri
nary Medicine, and Jack A. Crock-
ford, game management chief for the
Game and Fish Commission.
They were assisted by Robert W.
Cannon, Game and Fish Commission
biologist, and veterinary medicine
seniors John A. Roeder Jr. and John
H. Henderson Jr.
An air gun developed by Crock-
gia coastal island forest served as a
laboratory experiment for the group,
proving earlier experiments to be
correct.
An air gun developed by Crock-
ford was used to Are darts Into the
hips of deer, which were paralyzed by
a strychnine alkaloid derivative de-
University schools and the Georgia
resulted in a new development in
veloped by Dr. Feurt. An antidote
of pentobarbital sodium was then
adminitsered to put the animals to
sleep, counteracting the strychnine.
Dr. Hayes worked out the schedule
for intravenous Injections of the
antidote.
While they are still “dopey” from
the antidote, the deer are led to
cages in which they are transported
to areas of sparse deer population.
Six of the deer captured on the re
cent expedition are being kept at the
University park for further observa
tion.
The deer receive no 111 effects from
the project, Dr. Hayes said Tuesday,
after having observed the animals
for some time.
Work is now in progress to ex
pand the program. “We are working
toward a more effective means of
capturing the deer,” Dr. Hayes
noted, "and at the same time we are
striving for a better safety margin.”
