Confederate Memorial Stands
In Honor of Southern Soldiers
By Anne
Have you ever wondered about
the middle of Broad street ?
Dr. E. M. Coulter, history depart
ment head, relates this story of the
statue.
The structure dividing Broad
street, downtown Athens, is one of
the first memorials erected in honor
of Confederate soldiers. It was the
second such monument in Georgia
and the ninth in the South.
Finances for the memorial were
raised by Southern women because
the men felt such a gesture was not
becoming to gentlemen.
With the pasisng of time, Confed
erate soldiers’ remains were return
ed to Athens for burial. Women of
the community were determined to
erect a monument to these true
Southerners.
In 188 6, the Ladies Memorial As
sociation of Columbus appropriated
*4 ,000 for upkeep of Confederate
graves. The Athens chapter of the
United Daughters of the Confederacy
became a branch of this association.
In February of 1886, the Athens
ladies gave a concert to raise money
for this cause. During the next few
years, these ladies presented several
additional programs to obtain funds
for this worthwhile Southern cause.
Several shows, the casts being
composed of Athens ladies and male
University students, and a fair were
presented in hopes of enlarging fi
nances for this Confederate* statue.
Grant Plans Talk
About Segregation
Hugh O. Grant, Augusta, will
speak at Phi Delta Phi national legal
fraternity meeting Wednesday at 1
p.m. in the Holman Hotel. His sub
ject will be “Various Aspects of Seg
regation in the South Today.”
Grant is a leader in the States'
Rights Council of Georgia, Inc. This
organization was established to de
fend the sovereign rights of the peo
ple of Georgia in such matters as
segregation in the public schools and
elsewhere, according to current pub
licity releases.
He began speaking on this sub
ject before civic groups and mass
meetings in several states before the
Supreme Court decision of May 17,
1954, declaring segregation in pub
lic schools unconstitutional.

the story behind the monument in

|on May 5, 1871, when the Italian
marble cornerstone was laid. «
The monument, carved by Morb-
walter of Augusta, was unveiled on
a rainy June day in 1872.
Names of the Confederate soldiers
are listed in alphabetical order on
the $4,444.44 marble structure, of
which the base is embedded in con
crete.
Thus it stands, in the center of
town, a memorial to Athens' Confed-
edate dead. ,
