INTERESTING PEOPLE
Blind Students Possess Naturalness
By Carol Craven
Ann and Otis Stephens, East, Point, are blind, but they are not handicapped. Having a keen sense of
humor and great ingenuity, the. brother and sister can, as they put it, “do everything that other people
can except read without their hands.”
Both are "A" students. Ann Is ma-
Jorlng in music with no definite fu
ture plans, and Otis Is majoring in
pblitlcal science with ambitions of
teaching on the college level or be
ing a lawyer.
Otis won the Freshman Talent
Show when he was a freshman In
19G3 and Ann was first place winner
this year.
Ann and Otis are very active in
campus life. Otis plays the piano In
the Georgia Bulldog Orhcestra, de
bates on the varsity team and serves
as an Argonaut in Reed Hall. He is
a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fra
ternity.
Ann, who is majoring in classical
music, sings in the A Capelin Choir.
She began her training at the piano
while she was a first grader at Faith
School in Atlanta. Ann reads her
music In Braille, and mimt memorize
all the notes before playing it. That

this does not hold her back is dem
onstrated by the fact that she pre
sented two-hour-long concerts while
at the Academy for the Blind.
Hiking, golf and various other
sports are Otis' hobbies. Ann likes
swimming, deep-sea fishing, dancing
and a number of games which in
clude rummy, solitaire, checkers and
dominoes.
The Stephens takes notes in class
with a stylus and a slate process of
Rraille. They type assignments and j
themes. Ann's roommate is also a
music major and they study together.
Book reports present no problem.
Ann listens to the complete book on
record.
Both Ann and Otis have keen
senses of humor. Once Ann hid in
her closet for an hour while a room-
mote and the girls who lived near
her searched the dormitory in vain.
COL. RICHARD B. TRIMBLE is shown above being assisted into a
robe for an initiation which made him the second man in history to be
formally accepted into Alpha Lambda Delta, freshman women’s hon
orary society. Trimble lias taught for a number of years in the politi
cal science department of the University and has served as the society's
sponsor. The ceremony was held in Dawson Hall Nov. 10.
