Legends Observe
Valentine*s Origin
I lie origin of Valentine’s Day is probably more obscure than any
other day that we observe. Numerous legends have arisen in an at
tempt to account for it.
One calls it a survival of the Luper-
calia, an old Roman feast held in
kebruary when young maidens were
allowed their first partners for the
festive activities.
Another refers to the rural tra
dition of the "mating season” of
birds at this time of year. The cus
tom of choosing special loving friends
seems to be a carryover of this idea.
Most of us were taught stories
about an uncanonized saint named
Valentine in early Roman history,
who has become the patron saint of
the day.
According to other traditions in
our culture, girls did anything from j
eating an egg-shell filled with salt I
in the faith that they would dream
of their future lovers and marry be
fore the next year.
Whatever the source of the cus
toms which we will observe next
week, whether our affection takes
the form of candy, cupids, red hearts
or romantic verse. I’m sure that
each of us is grateful for a good
excuse for a special expression of
our love to that very special person.
