PACK TWO
Library Receives Microfilm
w
“When completed, on r colled ion of 1 Ht h century newspapers on
microfilm will probably be Ibe largest contained in any one place in
the United States," said \V. I'ortcr Kellam, director of the University
library.
This statement was made possible
by the contributions of R Carter
Pittman, I<aw School graduate of
1924. Pittman’s primary Interest as a
student and later as a lawyer and
businessman In Dalton, has been the
study of Constitutional haw.
In pursuing this Interest, he soon
recognised a need for the material
contained In the newspapers of the
18th century, a period of fundamen
tal history of our country. It was
during this hundred years that the
formation of the Union look place
and Philadelphia abounded in politi
cal debates.
Pittman, who worked ss a student
assistant In the Library as an under
graduate, gnthers the microfilms
with the assistance of the library,
reviews them for the Information be
needs, then gives them to the perma
nent library collection.

Georgia Center
Boasts Modern

•
The new Georgia Center assem
bly room boosts a boon to speak
ers—especially those who are ex
tremely tall or short.
A mechanical marvel developed by
I.B.M. serves each speaker with a
lectern which fits his height.
It practically does everything but
talk for the speaker and it does tell
him the time and keep time on his
speech. Two clocks are on the lec
tern. One gives the hour, the other
times the speech and sets off a red
light when the speech time has ex
pired.’
The top of the lectern Is mechani
cal and can be tilted either way.
There are lights built Into the lec
tern and there Is a place where a
teleprompter can be installed.
Georgia Center’s lectern is very
similar to the one used at the Re
publican National Convention In the
Cow Palace at San Francisco last
summer.

Pharmacy To Add
Extra Year by ’60
It’s going to take longer to be
come a pharmacist in the future ac
cording to Dean Kenneth L. Waters,
College of Pharmacy.
Ily 1960 every pharmacy student
in the country will have to sign up
for a five-year college program in
stead of the present four-year one.
There Is simply too much for the
future pharmacists to learn to cram
it into four years, the dean explains.
Thp fifth year of the pharmacy pro
gram will provide two extra quarters
in liberal arts work and one extra
quarter in pharmacy.
Being a good pharmacist has never
been easy, Dean Waters said, and it
is getting even more difficult all of
the time.
