Compos’ Steel Band
Brings Exotic Drum
Bln thin To Campus
BY ANN SASSER
Pedros Compos, 22-year-old pre- j
j veterinary Benior, has introduced a
j new sound on the University cam-
pus—the exotic South American
sound, the steel drum.
He came to this country for the
first time in 1956 from his home j
In San Juan, Puerto Rico. Pedro was
quite Impressed with the reports of
good-looking girls on the campus, |
as well as the University's reputa
tion for being a fine institution of J
learning.

HIS INTEREST in these drums
began two years ago when a friend
gave him one. He was always in
trigued by them when he went to the
carnival. In his sophomore year he
attended the University of Puerto
Rico, where he and his fraternity
brothers—the Phi Sigma Alphas—
organized a steel band.
Pedro played his drum at the Jun
ior Panhellenlc dance and has play
ed at many other functions on cam
pus. He recently entertained for the
Rotary Club in Savannah.
Pedro, along with three other
boys from South America, have
formed a steel drum band. Qilberto
Sa, from Brazil, plays the tumba
drum, Guillermo Arclniegas and
Oenaro Diaz, both from Colombia,
play the bongo drums, and Pedro
plays the piano drum.

BESIDES PLAYING the steel
drums as a hobby, he enjoys hunt
ing, fishing, constructing model air
planes, and holds a special interest
In football and horse racing.
Upon his graduation in the fall,
he plans to return home and open
up a veterinary clinic or do work
for the government. Hts love for
animals must run In the family, for
his father owns a pet shop and has
worked with animals for years.

FACING A TV CAMERA might not be as frightening if this weeks
Girl of the Week was operating the camera. Julianne Amason,
a freshman from Fort Waiton Beach, Florida, llsta Alpha Lambda
Delta, and Modern Dance Club among her activities. Julianne Is a
talented singer and enjoys skin diving, cooking, sailing, and writing.

Skin protection that is. Old Spice refreshes and stimulates, guards against the loss of vital
skin moisture. Feels great, too. Brisk, bracing, with that tangy Old Spice scent. It does seem
to attract female admirers, but what red-blooded
man needs protection against girls? 1.00
