Carolina Greek System
Presents Good Program
By ALAN WKXLER
Editors Note: For the next two weeks THE RED AND BLACK will
spotlight fraternity systems at three southern institutions—North
Carolina, Auburn, and Florida. In these articles we will be trying
to point out good points in these systems. THI8 WEEK NORTH
CAROLINA.
At Chapel Hill there are 23 fra
ternities and seven sororities. In
cluded in the list are ATO, Chi Phi,
Chi Psi, TEP, Theta Chi, Sigma Nu,
Sigma Chi, SAE, PiKA, Phi Delta
Theta, Pi Kappa Phi, KA, Kappa
Sigma, and Lambda Chi Alpha.
Each year their 1FC puts out a book
let comparative to the one the Geor
gia IFC edits. They disclose the dates
of rush, which runs for seven days,
and also publish the average ex
penditures for a fraternity man each
month. This figure is $90. At Geor
gia the average figure is $85.

THE NORTH CAROLINA IFC
awards a trophy each year to the
most outstanding fraternity based
on campus representation, IFC par
ticipation, intramurals, social activi
ties, and house appearance.
The fraternities average 39 mem
bers with the largest being the
PiKA s with 63.
A student can pledge a fraternity
In the fall and must maintain a “C”
average during his pledgeship, which
runs for one semester.

NORTH CAROLINA has what it
calls "GREEK WEEK." During this
period—the equivalent of “HELL
WEEK” at Georgia—the pledges of
all fraternities participate in a week
of constructive activities which in
stills a feeling of “togetherness.”
The main accomplishment of this
week is its effect on interfraternity
and community relations.
* • •
THE FIRST NIGHT the pledges
go to different fraternity houses for
exchange dinners. After dinner they
are treated to an open house coffee
break at the sorority houses.
The next afternoou each class is
assigned an area in the community
to clean up. At the end of the day
they are again treated to exchange
dinners.
The next day a field trip is held
and the winning team is awarded
a trophy. Parties are held that night.
The annual carnival follows this
on Thursday of “GREEK WEEK.”
A trophy being given to the most
outstanding class.
On the final night a banquet is
held for all pledges, faculty advisors
and guests. Here a trophy is given
to the class which is judged the best
during “GREEK WEEK.”
