Ware Shoots 283
ToWinTop Honors
In SIC Tournament
By JOHN NEWSOME
After three years of trying, Cobby
Ware, Georgia’s current golf captain,
won the annua) SEC-SIC golf tourna
ment
The 21-year-old senior fired a
blistering five-under-par 67 on
Saturday to match the 283 total of
LSU’s Don Essig, who led the field
throughout most of the tourney.
Essig, who had finished earlier
with what seemed an unbeatable
total, was already on a train headed
for Atlanta to catch a plane back to
Baton Rouge. Since he was not
available to compete in a play-off
round, tournament officials awarded
the top spot to Ware.
Ware played the familar Athens
Country Ciub course in regulation
72-72 figures on Thursday and Fri
day for a total of 144, compared to
a 141 for the par-busting Essig and
Florida’s Frank Beard.
That set the stage for Saturday’s
activities which saw ware chop five
strokes from his previous best and
come Into the 18th needing a birdie
three for a tie. He was on the green
in two shots and sank a short putt
for his birdie-three.
