Architectural Plans
For New Coliseum
Now Progressing
By JENNY WARLICK
Plans for Georgia’s coliseum are
in progress to make a much-needed
dream a reality.
The Board of Regents has author
ized the University to proceed with
architectural plans and an Atlanta
architect firm, Copper, Barrett,
Skinenr, Woodberry, and Copper, has
been selected. President Aderhold
has appointed a committee to work
with the architects.
The committee is composed of Dr.
J. A. Williams, Coach Wallace Butts,
Coach Harbin Lawson, Dr. Hugh
Masters, Dean C. C. Murray, and
B. C. Kinney. It is now considering
preliminary plans drawn up by the
architectural firm.
"No date is available yet as to
when construction will begin,” said
Dean Williams, directoi of develop
ment. It will take a minimum of
six months before the drawings of
the building will be completed. Also,
he said that no funds have been ap
propriated. "They await a bond
issue by the University gjystem Build
ing Authority."
The estimated cost of the coliseum
will be $3 million and, when com
pleted, it will seat around 12,000
people. It will be a multi-purpose
building for basketball and athletic
agricultural programs, conferences in
conjunction with the Continuing
Education, and for all large Univer
sity convocations such as graduation.
Officers for the athletic business de
partment will also be located there.
The coliseum will be built in a
30-acre area around the location of
Ag drive, Burnett street, Pinecrest
road, and the football practice field.
Although its final shape is still in
the preliminary stage, Dean Williams
assures students that Georgia's col
iseum will not look like Tech's “Big
Dome."
Georgia Chess Team Wins
In their first match of the year,
the University chess team defeated
tin Citadel 10 V4-6 %.
Dr. H. Morris was high point man
for Georgia scoring 4 % points and
losing V4 • Others scoring points for
Georgia were Henry Rutor 4, and
Melidi Khorashinsakl 2.
