Pinkerton Leads
Bulldog Tankmen
By ROBERT EUBANKS
Georgia swim star Rolffs Pinker
ton. the South’!) fastest 50-yard free
style man, capped a 14-event winning
! streak In his specialty that began
after his third place finish at
Florida on Jan. 12 with his second
successive
SEC crown in
both the 50 and
the 100-yard free
style events.
Pinkerton, a na
tive of Managos,
Venezuela, has
been having good
times during the
past month, says
Georgia swim
tutor "Bump” Gabrielsen.
Gabrlelsen adds, "We feel that
Rolffs has a very good chance to
win the 50 in this year’s national
finals in Seattle.”
I.ast year Pinkerton won the SEC
50 in 23.8 and the 100-yard free
style in 53.5. This year he lopped off
seven-tenths of a second in the 50
to conquer his sterling foe, Florida’s
Terry Green in the SEC meet.
Ills best time, incidentally, (22.5
vs. Florida) came when the chips
were down—when he was after re
venge against the Gators who had
beaten him in Gainesville. That fast
time also tied the Stegeman Hall
pool record set by Georgia’s Olympic
star Reid Patterson in 19 54 and was
just one-tenth of a second off Pat
terson’s all-time SEC record of 22.4
which was set in the conference meet
in Gainesville in 1954.
Pinkerton is also the star anchor
man on Georgia's record-setting 400-
yard relay team.
