Debates Alabama
The University debate team
will meet the University of
Alabama team in a match
scheduled for Nov. 19 at 8 p.m.
in the Chapel. The public is
invited to attend.
The debate is the first in a
series of Great Debates sched
uled for this year. Other meets
in the series are set for winter
and spring quarters, when the
University team will meet Har
vard and either the University
of Dublin or the University of
Edinburgh.
Alabama has one of the
strongest teams in the nation
and has placed high in pre
vious meets this year.
Arguing the topic “Resolved
That the Federal Government
Should Guarantee the Oppor-
tuity for Higher Education to
all Qualified High School
Graduates,” will be Dede
Sharpe and Charles Campbell
from the University and Wil
liam Avery Jr. and Robert
Roberts from Alabama. The
Alabama team will assume the
burden of proof and take the
affirmative while the Univer
sity will argue the negative.
Moderator of the debate will
be Dean John O. Eidson of the
College of Arts and Sciences.
Competition in pool, bowl
ing, ping pong and bridge will
begin Nov. 18 in Memorial
Hall, sponsored by the Student
Center.
All interested students, es
pecially coeds, are urged to
sign up for one or more of
these events in Room 207 of
Memorial Hall.

‘Antigone’ Next Week
The University Theatre's second production of the sea
son .lean Anouilh’s “Antigone"- opens Wednesday, Nov.
“0 in Fine Arts Auditorium. This play is considered one
of the most famous and successful works of the contem
porary French author.
The play is a retelling, in modern interpretation, of the
myth of Oedipus’ daughter as told by Sophocles in 500 15.C.
Antigone is played by Virginia Babbitt, a graduate stu
dent from Coushatta, La. Larry Moran, graduate student
from Thibodaux, La., plays the part of Crcon.
Anouilh has given the myth pertinence to 20th Century
man. “Antigone" was first produced in France during
Nazi occupation. To the French. Antigone represented the
spirit of France.
The essence of the play is that life is corruption. Life
dulls and depraves men’s innate goodness. Those who con
tinue to live are content to exist in an ordinary routine.
Other members of the cast are Nan 1 link e-Shearer, grad
uate student. Belfast. Ireland: Jimmie Ralston, junior,
tlaiucsvillc; Larry Weiss, graduate student, San Diego,
Calif.; and Don lloepner, graduate student, Tulsa, Okla.
