Play Review
Set of 4 Antigone ’
Called Fabulous
By AMIRA TAY1XJR
The University Theatre opened hint night with ltn second
production of tin 1 seaaon, Jean Anoullh'H “Antigone.”
Vlrglnln Bobbitt portrays Antigone and I.nrry Weiss portrays
Creon, King of Thebes, against a background of geometrical
forms, rectangles, inclined planes and polygons.
The fabulous set Is designed to portray different scenes and
different times on the same stage. The rectangular columns
of the set lend majesty and bearing to the play. They emphasize
Creon's overbearing power and Antigone’s seemingly small
stature, which later proves to he her power that overshadows
Creon.
In the background, a lightning-like design adds a foreboding
and dramatic Import to the set. As the mood of the play
changes, the lighting on the "bolt” changes to emphasize sor
row, anxiety, and pain but never happiness. When Antigone
awaits death, for example, blood-red lights fall on the “holt.”
Performers meriting special mention are Miss Bobbitt and
Weiss. Miss Bobbitt, In her drnmatic black gown and raven
black hair, holds the audlenco in awe ns she nrgues with her
Unde Creon about her ronsons for choosing death rather than
life In a world where only sin and wrongdoing exist.
Weiss, as King Creon, Is a political tyrant who believes that
life must go on, regardless of events which try to drag one
from his position, regardless of personal grief nnd sorrow. To
him, politics Is life.
The tragedy la a present day Interpretation of Sophocles'
“Antigone" written some 2,4 00 years ago. Anouilh wrote and
produced the play In Paris In 1943. He made Antigone a
martyr who refuses to say yes. She Is willing to give up life
rather than live n life In which Creon promises her “happiness”
provided that she does not Interfere with anything which does
not concern her material existence.
