statement, the ultimate in in
consideration has been com
mitted. Like all men of all
ages the assassin was guided
by thought. Even though we
don’t know this man, or know
his reasoning and liis feeling,
I think it important that we
examine the kind of general
thought involved in the be
havior that he has exhibited.
First, I must reiterate that
his behavior was ultimate in
inconsideration. This man was
criminally and murderously
inconsiderate. But the basis of
even murder and assassination
is simple inconsideration ex
tended to the point of depriv
ing another of his life.
Second, we must take this
point and think it through
What are the elements of in
considerate behavior: not on
ly at this extreme level, hut
what of other lesser levels?
To he sure, extreme inconsid
eration is murder, hut even
the slightest inconsideration
leads to the propogation of
negative thought about the
dignity of man. and towards
the acceptance of inconsider
ation of one man to another.
Was the assassin crazy,
was he insane, was he out of
touch wdth his abilities to
think straight? These ques
tions cannot be answered be
cause there will never he
clear information on this
point. But it is highly proba
ble that he was not crazy,
was not even temporarily out
of his mind.
He very well may have in
volved himself in an act that
he thought was best for the
world; he might have, in his
own mind thought himself the
savior of the world as he shot
the President of the United
States. The question is how
did he learn that his superior
ly inconsiderate behavior was
for him correct: Correct
enough that he acted upon it?
I would ask a question of
each of you so that you may
better understand how a per
son can possibly get into a
hind of thinking that any vio
lent act could in any way do
“good” for mankind. I would
ask each of you to answer this
question in terms of your own
life: Have I been inconsider
ate of my fellow man on any
level in the last few weeks?
Perhaps this is too hroad, here
is the question is more direct
terms.
1. Have I flaunted any of
the rules of the University
such as drinking and cheat
ing, etc? Do I even know the
rules of the University?
2. Have I been inconsider
ate of my many neighbors by
littering the streets and high
ways?
3. Have I been involved in
obnoxious behavior even when
alone?
4. Have I been inconsider
ate of myself in failing to do
my best in all facets of life?
And on the other side of
this point, have I helped a
friend with a lesson in a way
that robbed him or her of the
initiative of self help and self
success?
I am not in any way saying
that "angel like” behavior on
the part of the students at the
University could have pre
vented this intrusion on the
life of our President.
But I am sure that the flux
of society stirring even small
seemingly inconsequencial
acts of consideration from one
person to another builds
them into greater and more
revolting acts. Make it stop
with you, don’t help it grow.
If we as man are to bene
fit from these horrible events,
it will come through Indivi
dual rededication to the goals
of self control, intellectual ad
vancement of reason, and the
perfection of reciprocal con
sideration of each person to
each other person. Let it be
gin with you.
