At Louisville
The novice debate team from
the University Is among the
74 teams from 21 states in the
seventh annual Alleman Na
tional Debate Tournament
sponsored by Bellarmlne Col
lege.
The tournament will be held
Friday and Saturday at the
Kentucky Hotel In Louisville.
Notre Dame, Ohio State, the
U. S. Military and Naval
academies, and Marquette Uni
versity are among the teams
entered. Wayne State of De
troit, last year’s winner, did
not enter this year.
The winning team will re
ceive the Grand Champion
ship trophy—a silver punch
bowl to be kept for a year.
The winning team also will
receive a plaque and tro
phies will be presented to
the three best debnters in
the preliminary round.
The subject for the debate
is: “Resolved, That the Fed
eral Government Should Estab
lish a National Program of
Public Works for the Unem
ployed.”
The tournament Is named in
honor of the late Benson S.
Alleman, former director of
forensics at Bellarmlne.

DR. BESSMAN SPEAKS
TO PHARMACY GROUP
Dr. Samuel P. Deasman. professor of pediatric research at the
University of Maryland, was the guest speaker Tuesday at the
School of Pharmacy's commemorative lecture in honor of Dr.
Crawford W. Long.
In his lecture, “Theories on the Mechanism of Insulin Ac
tion," Dr. Bessman outlined the historic development of insulin
and its use in the control of diabetes.
Dr. Bessman received his medical degree from Washington
University Medical School. He has served in the U. S. Public
Health Service and as a member of the faculty of George Wash
ington University of Medicine. He also has served in other
posts involving researcli projects in pediatrics and bio-chemistry.
Dr. Bessman is an associate professor of bio-chemistry at the
University of Maryland.
Dr. Long, a graduate of the University, is credited with the
discovery of the clinical use of ether as an anesthetic agent.
Two Students Chosen
For Political Meetings

Robert Rlaekwell and Charles Campbell, graduate stu-
dents in the University’s Political Science Department,
will meet with government officials in conferences at the
1 • Naval Academy in Annapolis, March 31-April 3, and
at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, April 21-24.
Blackwell was chosen to at
tend a symposium sponsored by
the American Assembly, en
titled "Congress and the Na
tion’s Future.” Blackwell and
other students throughout the
country will meet top state de
partment officials at the Air
Force Academy to discuss re
cent criticisms of Congress and
to view possible Congressional
reforms.
“The emphasis," stated
Blackwell, “Is on how Con
gress can be made a more
effective partner In the gov
ernment.” He said special
attention will be given to
the seniority system, filibust
ering and other procedural
rules.
Charles Campbell will rep
resent Georgia at the Naval
Academy Foreign Affairs Con
ference. More than 160 stu
dents from more than 100 col
leges will discuss problems In
U. S. foreign policy with gov
ernment leaders, including
Dean Rusk.
Campbell said such men
want to learn students' reac
tions to American policy in
Africa, the Middle East, and
other areas. Each student may
choose from 10 sub-topics for
analysis; Campbell has elected
to speak on “Western Eco
nomic Policy."
Dr. George Parthcmos,
head of the Political Science
di'liai-tinent who selected the
two students, said, “Both
men have compiled excellent
records at the University,
and they will represent Geor
gia very well."
Blackwell and Campbell are
teaching assistants working to
ward M.A. degrees in political
science. Campbell is assistant
debate coach for the University
team.
