This year the race for
Oscar Is closer than ever.
There nre excellent contend
ers In every category, but as
we all know, there can only
be one winner.
Therefore, I will take the
liberty of predicting the win
ners. These predictions will not
necessarily be my personal
favorites hut will reflect the
way I feel the Academy mem

It Is necessary to remember
that Hollywood can be fickle
. . . the "best” in any one
category may not receive the
award.

And so, the nominees for
best picture of the year are
“A Thousand Clowns,"
"Darling," "Doctor Zhivago,"
"Ships of Fools,” and “The
Hound of Music." The win
ner: “The Hound of Music,"
although “Doctor Zhivago"
will give It a close race.
The nominees for best act
ress are Julie Andrews (Mu
sic), Julie Christie (Darling),
Samantha Eggar (The Collec
tor), Elizabeth Hartman (A
Patch of Blue), and Simone
Signoret (Ship).
This will be a close one but
the winner will be a Julie. An

Only one other actress has
won Oscars in successive years,
Luise Rainer in 1936-37 for
“The Great Zlegfeld” and “The
Good Earth.”
Richard Burton (The Spy
Who Came In from the
Cold), Leo Marvin (Cat
Uullou), Laurence Olivier
(Othello), Rod Steiger (The
Pawnbroker) and Oskar
Werner (Ship) are the
nominees for best actor, and
once again the race will be
a close one.
Most experts are betting on
Lee Marvin, but I think the
award will go to Rod Steiger,
although my personal favorite
is Richard Burton. (Whew!)
“The Shadow of Your Smile"
from "The Sandpiper” will be
named as the best song. The
other nominees are “The Ballad
of Cat Ballou," “What’s New
Pussycat,” “The Sweetheart
Tree” (The Great Race) and
"I Will Not Walt for You"
(The Umbrellas of Cherbourg).
Nominations for the best
performance by an actress
In a supporting role are held
by Ruth Gordon (Inside
Daisy Clover), Joyce Red

(Othello), Shelly Winters
(Patch) and Peggy Wood
(Music).
