Reviews Reveal
French Poppins
By DAVID HART
Red and Black Reviewer
BITS 0’ THIS AND THAT
On review . . .
I read two reviews during
the past week which I thought
were particularly interesting.
I pass them on to you.
In "Saturday Review” con
cerning a recording of "Mary
Poppins” in French: In a
word, it’s supercalifragilisticex-
pideliltcieaux.
In "Cinema,” a review of a
Joan Crawford starrer: “I Saw
What You Did” and I wish to
God that I
hadn't.
In the mail. ..
1. Are Dick
and Tommy
Smothers really
brothers?
Yes. They
have been ever
since the sec-
HART ond one came
along.
2. Why do most children
in commercials have freckles?
It’s known as spot advertis
ing in the trade.
From a press release . . .
Have you ever heard of Dick
Farina and his wife Miml? I
haven’t. Or I hadn’t until I
received a letter with a P.S.
telling me that they are ac
complished folk singers.
Well, now Dick has written
a novel entitled "Been Down
So Long It Looks Up to Me.”
It’s about today’s so-called
"college scene” and “avoids
the usual pitfalls and cliches."
Adjectives used in describ
ing the book are “hilarious., i
chilling, sexy, profound, mani-
cal, beautiful and outrageous.”
In any case the title is in
teresting.
For those lazy, hazy, crazy
days of summer . . .
Theater Under the Stars in
Atlanta has announced Its
1966 summer schedule.
For those who will be in and
around Atlanta and for those
who will be in summer school,
the season may hold some in
terest.
The schedule Includes Ann
Blyth in “The King and I”;
Jane Morgan in “Can-Can”;
Edie Adams in “The Bells Are
Ringing”; Jane Pow’ell in "Ca
rousel”; Gordon McRae In
“Oklahoma”; and Danny Day-
ton in "A Funny Thing Hap
pened On the way to the
Forum."
Somehow, Atlanta always
seems to make summer school
bearable.
For thought . . .
A quote from Tennessee
Williams’ “Cat On a Hot Tin
Roof.” (I am currently on a
binge, reading as many of Wil
liams’ plays as possible).
“Why? (do people have to
fool themselves about death
and the things In life which

To Me."
they don't like). Because hu
man beings dream of life ever
lasting, that’s the reason. But
most of them want it on earth
and not in heaven.”
To extend this column . . .
We all know that many peo
ple feel that most of today’s
popular music is a mistake.
Well, a long play album that
has recently been released was
actually conceived by accident
one night 18 months ago at a
radio station in San Francisco.
Called "One Stormy Night,”
the record consists of popular
music interspersed with un
usual recordings such as train
and storm sound effects.
The unusual melding of the
arresting and intimate sounds
of a thunder and rainstorm
with music should make this
album appealing to those who
want something different. To
say the least.
