Computer Dote: final install

Ily DAVID GINN
In my sleep I moved.
My elbow touched the wall.
I drew It away.
Mint, 11 o a 11 n g, hanging
around, edged my view; and
then it suddenly cleared. I
could see myself.
I stood beside a door. Over
the door there was a plaque;
HOME OF MU. COMPUTER. I
hesitated, then turned the gold
en knob, and it opened easily.
Inside, there was light. A
rainbow of colors. Crystal,
chrome, polish. Reality.
Softly came the music to my
ears . . . the Reatles, with
George Harrison singing "I
Need You” . . . fading Into
Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No. 1-
in 11-flat minor . . . drifting
after minutes Into "Rove Minus
Zero/No Limit.” After that re
laxing Interlude, the tempo
speeded up—Henry Manclnl's

Orchestra played the James
Rond Theme with a tremendous
lull id-up and then an earth-
shaking cymbal crash.
For a split-second only, I was
aware of the presence of atr-
ronditlonlng
A calm.
Then, out of the mist of the
great hall camo a voice, power
ful, “Yes, yoah come, and
we'ah glad you are here.”
I saw an armchair appear
out of the mist, thick leather,
red, and I sat In it, knowing It
was for me.
On a gigantic motion picture
screen before me things began
to move. Names, faces, swaying
bodies, and titles . . . the title:
MR. COMPUTER.
His face came on the screen,
white heard, mustache—a gen
uine Image of Colonel Sanders
-and the picture enlarged un
til I saw Ills full figure walking
toward me.
Suddenly he stepped out of
the picture; yes, white suit and
all.
"We received yoah applica
tion," he said confidently.
"VVo're awl ready for you.”
Ho pointed toward the
screen. Faces began to appear,
rapidly switching from one to
nnother, hundreds of faces,
forms, shapes—faster, faBter
. . . until no longer was there
clear definition between those
before and after.
When I realized that the
screen was parting In the cen
ter, I closed my eyes. I knew
what was coming: Her.
I was afraid to see.
“Behold!” the voice was say
ing (Colonel Sanders’ voice),
“behold! she Is yours.”
I opened my eyes.
In my sleep I moved.
I saw a girl, lovely.
My elbow touched the wall.
Fading, fading . . .
I drew it away.
Even the mist faded, faded
with my dream.
For a long time I lay there
in bed, trying to make It all
come back, wanting to see—
and knowing that I could not.
There was nothing to see.
There was no perfect date.
There Is no perfection.
Rut . . .
I though of my list of com
puterized dates, the list I had
memorized long ago.
Smiling, I remembered a face
and a voice. A sense of humor.
I stood, walked down the
stairs, picked up the telephone,
and began to dial.
