Dear Mias Tate:
I am not an undergraduate

your column, that something
might “happen" if I apeak up
about varloua women'a rulea.

necessary in many cases. It
seems reasonable that a girl’s
time should be her own to a
great extent—she should be
able to come and go as long
as she obeys closing curfew.
On the other hand, I can
aee that at an institution of
| this size, without some sort
of sign-out system, it might be
impossible to find a girl If an
emergency should arise. On the
whole, however, I question
I whether it is the specific busi
ness of the University to know
your whereabouts every minute,
or even to decide where you
may and may not go.
As to closing hours, I
think you weaken your po
sition with your plea to stag
ger the curfews to prevent
i accidents. You know' what
| your curfew is, and if you
are not responsible enough

to leave sufficiently early to
drive safely back to your
dorm, then it might be ques
tioned if you are responsible
enough to deserve revision
of protective rules.
Certainly you ought to be
allowed to wear whatever de
cent clothing you wish. I doubt
that slacks are considered in
decent on a picnic, but It Is
obvious that they would be In
decent In church. For the Uni
versity to decide arbitrarily
that you do not have enough
sense to tell the difference is
for the administration to view
the coed as an idiot (and there
fore Incapable of profiting by
a University education).
The only solution to prob
lems of women’s rules, how
ever, Is to be found In co
operation with the admini
stration. If enough coeds
would make their objections
known to their elected repre
sentatives, certainly at least
gradual changes could be
made.
Dean McBee proved herself
amenable to change by endors

en,but coeds are doomed to
disappointment if they expect
revolution Instead of evolution
in the rules.

Female Follies
Women's Editor
I’m sure that each person on this campus (or at least
those who ever read The Red and Black) is aware of the
way I feel about rules which engulf the women students
of this university.
Recently, however, (Saturday, to be exact), one of my
fellow staff members and I were conducting a poll on the
way students on this campus plan to vote in Thursday’s
election of student body officers.
Most of the girls with whom I spoke seemed to be
reasonably sensible and showed a genuine concern about
who was to lie elected student body president. I was, how
ever, very shocked and disappointed by the answer which I
received from one dormitory call. The girl who answered
said, "Well, I don’t really know who’s running. Let me
ask someone else.”
She then proceeded to shout down the hall to someone
who I presume was her friend. This young lady shouted
back in a most unlady-like manner, “I don’t know' and I
don’t give a damn.”
Many of you probably already realize the point I’m
going to make. As much as I would like to see the Univer
sity break away from the loco parentis policy, I can see
why we must have it if the women students take this at
titude toward their responsibilities to elect student body
officers.
If we are not conscientious and responsible enough to
make our decisions in matters such as these, then we are
not mature enough to ask or demand rule changes.
Certainly this group of women students is a minority
group, but history generally shows that a majority of the
world’s population has always suffered because of the
follies of the minority.
