Only 3 Minutes From Campus
Choice Steaks—Fast Courteous Service
THE OLDEST RESTAURANT IN TOWN—EST. 1923
By BARRY MITCHELL
Names make the news, or so
the old journalistic saying goes.
The saying came true, at least
in part, this week with the
appearance of the new 1967-68
Student Directories.
UCA’s near 16,000 students
now can see their names, ad
dresses and all-important phone
numbers in print with those
of fellow students, back-to-
back with the same informa
tion about faculty and staff.
The 144-page book, consid
ered by some to be an indis-
p e n s a b I e piece of college
memorabilia, was distributed in
dormitory mailboxes early this
week. Directories became avail-
j able to off-campus students in
j mid-November.
Thumbing through the di-'
l rectory can be disappointing, j
I especially if the person you
wanted to telephone doesn't
have one. But a look at the
book can be interesting, too.
For instance, the Smiths, as
I expected, have the most popu
lar name on campus, numbering
189. Seven of these are named
John Smith. There also is one
Smithers, no Smothers and not
even a Brothers.
First runner-up are the
Joneses, with 113 students, and
109 are called Davis, while
there are 103 Williamses.
The Johnsons rate with 95,
but no Lyndons or Lady Birds. ]
There are five Humphreys, with
only one Hubert. The Kennedys j
are 17, and the Russells rank
with 14, one of which is Rich
ard Russell—but he’s from
Maryland!
There are seven Maddoxes,
only one from Atlanta, but the
Rockefellers, Romneys and
Reagens show a marked ab
sence.
The Pecks number six, with
seven Gregorys. There are 14
Grants, one named Gary, but
no Cary, and no Ulysses.
Also attending school here
are 19 Longs, ten Littles and
three Shorts. There are 32
Cooks and 23 Bakers.
Lab Studies Soil Samples
l$y JOE PENDERGRASS
The College Experiment Sta
tion, located in the basement
of Conner Hall, is one of three
soil testing laboratories in the
state designed to analyze soil
and plant tissue.
Managed by Dr. H. F. Per
kins, the lab processes about
20,000 soil samples per year,
checking texture, pH, phos
phorus und potassium levels.
Farmers, working through
county agents, had a total of
50 to 55 thousand samples
tested last year in the Univer
sity lab, the Coastal Plain Ex
periment Station at Tifton, and
the Georgia Experiment Station
at Experiment, Ga.
In addition to its soil analy
sis program, the lab has done
24,545 analyses this year for
28 research staff members rep
resenting 13 departments and
agencies.
The purpose of the soil test
ing lab, as stated by Dr. Per
kins, is "to make analysis of

primarily soil and . . . plant
tissue to determine a nutri
tional deficiency . . . and make
recommendations for correc
tions.”
The staff, including two lab
technicians, secretary, five un
dergraduate assistants, four
graduate students and Profes
sor and Director of College
Experiment Station Testing
Service, H. F. Perkins, uses the
most modern techniques pos
sible to obtain correct analysis.
By 1968, the lab plans to
offer extended services to farm
ers and staff members by in
troducing additional tests of
soil and plant tissue.
From American History, we
have one David Crockett, but
another student is named Miss
Moscow.
In addition, there are six
Rivers and 11 Bridges; 11
Carrs, nine Rhodes and two
Streets; 12 Days and 13
Knights, and 14 Cannons, but
only three Gunns.
There are six Birds and six
Beasleys, 12 Berrys and two
Pickens. Also, three Goods, one
Goodbread and six Goodmans
(or is it men?)—and two of
these are women.
In the spectrum of names
t h e r e are 98 Browns, 60
Whites, 18 Blacks, 17 Greens,
13 Grays, four Golds and only
one Blue—plus seven Pea
cocks!
One page in the directory
features one Pepper, one Pep
pers and a Peach, but she 8
from South Carolina. There
also is one Lemon and one Nutt.
For the romantically in
clined there are two Guys, one
Romeo, one Richman, one Man-
love, one Jester, seven Loves
and—alas—one Loveless.
