Desegregation Task Force
Set To Analy ze Problems
The University's School
Desecration Educational Cen
ter will spearhead formation
of a task force next week, in an
effort to help improve the
quality of education in rural
isolated areas of the South
where black pupils outnumber
white students
The Center will present a
blueprint for improvements
to 65 superintendents from
nine stales at a two week con
ference which started Monday.
The planning model was deve
loped b\ Southeastern Educa
tion Laboratory in Atlanta un
der a grant from the United
States Office of Education
Acting under a mandate from
Congress to find ways of
improving school opportuni
ties in rural isolated areas.
USOE contracted with educa
tional centers in Geor
gia. Florida and South Caroli
na for a survey of two districts

The survey showed that
these districts were handi
capped by lack of resources
for developing communica
tions skills, reducing drop
outs. providing pre-school
experiences and following-up on
gains made in head-start pro
grams. Also cited in the survey
were needs for providing in-
service training for teachers
of disadvantaged children and
developing new strategies for
organizing learning activities.

to advise a recently formed Ad

tal Quality
Representative Ottinger said
the committee made up of
about 50 members of Con
gress both from the House
and the Senate, w II “be non
partisan and loosely struc
tured in order to advance its
real purpose: self education."
In a letter to Di Odum, the
New York representative said
“Because of vour status in
your profession. I feel very
strongly that your advice
would be of real value to the
Congress. your assistance
and that of your colleagues
could be of great value to your
Congress and your country
Representative Ottinger said
the committee was being
formed in response to “mad*
quate" Congressional action
with regard to the “present and
future state of the environ
tuent. .

SCX’IAL WORK
The School of Social Work
at the University has received a
$28,669 grant from the United
States Department of Health.
Education and Welfare to pre
pare social workers for car
eers with youthful offenders.
The grant, from HEW's
Vocational Rehabilitation Ad
ministration. will provide for
hiring of a fulltime faculty
member and for four $200 a
month traineeships for gradu
ate students. The students will
also receive tuition and fees
and will have field instruction at
the Georgia Industrial Institute
at Alto.
Miss Merle Eoeckler. Asso
ciate Professor of Social
Work Director of Field
Instruction, was author of the
grand proposal and will be
project director for the pro
gram.
Dean Charles A Stewart
said the grant is the eight long
term training grant that the
School of Social Work has
received and is the school's
first award in the field of
corrections. “This project
will provide services to Geor
gia's youthful offenders, train
ing to graduate students, and
research in the form of mas
ters degree theses in correc
tions.'' he added.
Other training grants in the
School of Social Work are in
alcoholism, mental health, child
welfare, school social work,
mental retardation, and neuolo-
gicalsensorv diseases.
FELLOWSHIPS
Three University faculty
members and one graduate
student have received fellow
ships to the University of
Southern California for adv
anced study in gerontology,
preparatory to beginning in
struction in this area on the
University campus this fall at
the master’s and doctoral
levels.
They are Mrs. Dorothea
Edwards who is studying ur
ban ecology and aging. Miss
Imogenc Dean who is studying
aging and the family, and Mrs.
Charlotte Tatro. the graduate
student, who is studying the
processes of aging
Dr. Robert Wray, the third
faculty member and head of the
Georgia program, has already
returned from a two-week in-
stutute on concepts and is
sues in gerontology
Dr. Wray says that his stay
at USC. which is internationally
known for its work in geron
tology. confirms his confid
ence in the University’s ability
to offer an outstanding pro
gram of instruction, training
and research. The program
will be offered withing the
framework of already estab
lished degrees.
