ing the enemy as an extra in
the John Wayne film "The
Green Berets
Hon sought the job as a movie
extra when he heard that the
movie production company was
looking for 100 young men of
Oriental descent to play the
parts of Vietnamese and Viei
C<mg soldiers Hon had begun
the summer working at Ft
Gordon before becoming an
extra in the movie*
I phoned the* company at
Ft Henning, where the movie
was be*ing filme*d. boarde*d a bus
for Columbus at six o'clock Sun
day morning and went to work
Mondav morning This was in
August I worked there* for about
a month before* going back to
school." Hon said.
When aske*d to describe work
ing with John Wayne and David
Janssen, he said. At first, it
was very exciting to work on
the* same set with them After
a while, though, one gets use*d
to seeing the*m around every
day."
“As an extra, of course. I
was pretty much a part of
the* background, mostly guard
ing the* village with other Viet
namese soldiers.'"
The* "village" was an exact
replica of a Vietnamese ham
let. It was built entirely on
sand haule*d in bv truck to facili
tate* the movement of technical
equipment nee*essarv for the
production.
"The village*, which was built
by the* movie company and left
intact at Ft Benning for train
ing purpe>ses. was a lot like* the
Vietnam village at Ft. Gordon,
only smaller It was a fortified
village with sandbags, bunkers
and barbe*d wire." Hon explain

Student Center is a
concept of just a building for
students, according to Julia
Terry, program director for
. the center "University Union
| indicates a building as well as a
program for student, faculty
and ex-students, she said
The University Union is
housed in Memorial Hall and
from there all its activities
diverge. Six standing commit
tees plan and program the ac
tivities of the Union The art
committee gives those stu
dents interested in the per
forming or creative arts an
opportunity to express their
ideas. Events calendared for
the year include a Parisian side
walk show, an all campus
paint-in. a psvchedelelic rede
coration of a discotheque in
Memorial Hall and art exhibits.
The entertainment commit
tee caters to those students
who enjoy planning various
social events. The booking of
name bands for street dances,
jam sessions, reception and
concerts.
The ideas and issues com
mittee strives to bring to the
University stimulating, con
troversial and entertaining
speakers and dignitaries and
give the students a chance to
meet with these people.
The public relations com
mittee is concerned with main-

committee handles both the
large and small scale publicity
campaigns for the Union.
The recreation committee is
responsible for providing not
only recreational facilities

The film committee directs
and selects the showing of
movies in the center This year
they hope to have several un
derground films, vintage Amer
ican movies and avant garde
productions
Housed in the Union are
eight billiard tables, two
snooker tables and four table
tennis tables Movies are
shown in the Main Ballroom
where dances are also held
The Union has published a 14
page booklet that states its
goals and methods of opera
tion and have a phamplet which
it is distributed to all incoming
freshmen.

"Sounds of Young America
is a new national competition
for collegiate composers and
writers and will provide an
opportunity for students to
compete for national recogni
tion and scholarships, plus a
chance to see their works per
formed by the ton stars of
records and show business.
The event offers five catego
ries of competition, two lit
erary and three musical Writ
ers get an opportunity to
demonstrate excellence in ei
ther dramatic and comedic
writing or poetry and prose.
'Composers will compete in
popular music, folk music and
jazz categories.
Entries will be judged by a
panel of musical and literary
experts and three finalists in
each category will fly to Salt
Lake Sity. Utah on May 1-8. 1969
to see their works performed
by the top recording artists in
a big salute to the "Sounds of
Young America."
Judges will select the most
outstanding song or writing in
each category and the compos
ers and writers will take home
the national titles as well as
scholarships.

collegiate Music Festival.
Now. pop and folk groups
will have the same opportuni
ty as the Festival widens its
competition to include catego
ries for pop. folk and jazz
musicians and vocalists.
