Yesterday's fashion dictat
ed a set length for skirts,
dresses, and coals The oppos
ite is true today The modem
idea is summed up with this
often overworked phrase:
"do your own thing "
And. in "doing your own
thing," one has a wide range
of current skirt lengths to
choose from For instance,
there is the well-known mini
skirt
Brought into the fashion
spotlight bv Guidon's Mary
Quant and Carnaby Street,
and refined by Paris' Cour-
reges, the mini skirt length
began with built-in limita
tions. For instance, it was
condoned for the teenage and
younger age group, but fash
ion authorities vetoed this
new short skirt length for the
over-20 group
PROVES IMPRACTICAL
For most women, it proved
impractical, too. In order to
wear a mini properly, one had
to learn a whole new way of
walking, sitting, getting in
and out of cars, etc. And, an
other limitation is that from
its onset, the fashion world
predicted that it would grad
ually disappear What woman
wants to alter her wardrobe
according to a new skirt
length that she is told would
soon fade away into the al
ready cluttered fashion his
tory.
As a compromise length for
women over 20-years-old, the
just-above the skirt, one to
three inches above the knee,
has proven to be fashion
standard for those women —
young and old — who want to
be up-to-date by wearing a
length that displays the knee,
but do not want to look ridi
culous doing it.
The opinion of knowledge
able people in the fashion busi
ness is that this length will be
the major one (or fall. It is an
especially attractive length
for shorter women, who, in
longer lengths, seem to look
"all-skirt " Also, this level
lends itself to a variety of
skirt shapes — dirndl, A-line,
flared, pleated, straight The
just-above length has proven
to be the most flattering for

LENGTH SOURCES
The midi skirt, a mid-calf
length, may have developed
from several sources Some
people credit Uie movie "Doc
tor Zhivago." others point to
fashion designers' experi
ments with longer winter
coats to wear over mini
skats
The return to the romantic
look, as well as the influence
of the 1930 s and the populari
ty of the movie “Bonnie and
Clyde," also may have influ- ,
enced the longer skirt length
Regardless of its source. ;
the midi length is definitely a i
part of the 1969 fall fashion '
look Because women have |
become accustomed to the
greater freedom that the |
shorter skirt lengths have al
lowed. the midi length will
probably not be too successful
in converting the most fash- (
ion-conscious females into a
strictly midi length wearer
However, the midi does and |
will have a great influence on
evening wear and at-home
clothes, for winter coats, tor
raincoat and capes.
JUST-BKLOW LENGTH
Reintroduced this past fall
season with the return of the
defined waistline, the just-
below skirt length, one to two
inches below the knee, was
popular in the late 1950 s. For
day lime wear, this skirt
length has not caught on. even
though some influential fash
ion designers have claimed
that it is the most important
new length
The advantages of the reap
pearance of the just-bclow
skirt is that it offers a choice
of two acceptable daytime
lengths for the woman who
refuses the mini
Also, it puts the woman
who typically fashion uncon
scious — she has no idea of
the current looks in fashion
and will probably never have
any idea of the current looks
of fashion — batk into fash
ion, as far as her skirl length
goes She is the woman who
has been wearing her skirts
two inches below the knee
ever since they began being
made
MAXISKIRT
The maxi skirt, four inches
from the floor, is the most
recent entry in the contest tor
the most popular skirt length
In romantic, ruffly form, it
was perhaps strongly influ
enced by the movie "Elvira
Madigan " The maxi is most
often seen for evening, where
it is both romantic and lemi-
nine.
Five skirt lengths to choose
from — the mini, the just-
above, the midi, the just-be-
low and the maxi Women,
justifiable so. should rejoice
in such a wide range when in
former times, there was no
choice.
But, women should also be
; careful in selecting their skirt
length to make sure that it is
appropriate both for them and
for the occasion.
| For instance, the short
woman wearing the just-be-
! low would appear shorter than
t she really is. This skirt length
would be best worn by a tall
woman, who can afford, pro-
I portionately speaking, the
added skirt length
USE TASTE
And, there is the mini
length Who can wear it and
who can not has been a prob
lem since its appearance
Understandably so, over
weight women, short or tall
would appear ridiculous in
such a length But. most
women who are very slender
are able to wear the mini
most attractively
Where and when to wear
what skirt lengths is an often-
asked question The philosophy
of "do your own thing"
often applies here, but taste
should be considered too
For instance, a mini wedding
dress would not bo appropriate
ly worn in a church wedding
