Bill Shippey beat teammate Dannv Birchmore for the Geor
gia Stale Collegiate singles title The senior from Atlanta also
set a tournament record with his third straight singles crown in
three years
Using his best weapon a blazing serve. Shippey took Birch
more in straight sets, winning 86 and 6-3 Bill consistently got
his first service into play, a factor that proved to be important
for this malch.
Shippey and Birchmore traded games in the first set. each
winning his serve Shippey finally broke service in the 11th
game, aided by a couple of close line calls Birchmore then
proceeded to break Shippey s service and Shippey in turn broke
Birchmore's service to go up 76 After a couple of dueces. Bill
got set point to win 86
Shippey poured it on in the second set to win the match going
away He slammed one of Birchmore's lobs for his first point
and got his second when Birchmore netted a serve Shippey
then broke service on a double fault by his younger adversary
A combination of good service and even better placement ena
bled Bill to wrap it up for a 6-3 triumph
As mentioned before, it was Shippey s third straight stale
singles title Bill was also all-SEC' the past two years as well as
playing on the state champion doubles team The Bulldog cap
tain will close out his Georgia career in the SEC tournaments
next month
As a team, Georgia once again proved its superiority, plac
ing four of its netmen in the semifinals. Shippey had to beat
Brant Bailey to get a shot at Birchmore. who edged teammate
Norm Holmes. Tired out from these singles matches, the dou
bles teams of Shippey-Holmes and Birchmore-Bailey lost out to
the Georgia Tech doubles teams. Thus there was the unique
ness of an all-Georgia singles and an all-Tech doubles in the
final matches
The singles victories capped a fine 17-1 season for the Bull
dogs. Magill's men were able to down all of their foes except
Florida, the Gators hanging a whitewash on the Dogs
ft was a fitting end to a great season.
Shippey Takes State,
Defeats Birchmore
Georgia tennis captain Bill
Shippey took the 14th annual
state collegiate singles title
on Sunday at the Henry Feild
Tennis Stadium by downing
teammate| Danny Birchmore
86 and 6-3.
Earlier, the third-seeded
Bulldog senior beat Brant
Bailey 66 and 10-8 in the
semi-finals to move into one
of the singles brackets
Second-seeded Birchmore.
who trimmed Shippey in last
August's finals of the men's
Craekerland singles, reached
the finals by defeaUng Geor
gia's Norm Holmes 7-5 and 6-4
on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs
Mike Cmaylo upset top-seed
ed Larry Turville of Georgia
Tech on Friday to aid his
teammates' champion ship
drive.
After dropping the first set
6-1, Cmaylo mounted a rally
that carried him to 86 and 6-2
wins.
Ironically, the Fort Lau
derdale junior later fell to
Georgia's Brant Bailey in
three sets.
In the doubles division fi
nals that featured two Geor
gia Tech pairs. Larrv Turville
and Bob Speicher downed
Chris Baxter and Chuck
Sloane, 6-4 and 6-2, to gain the
title.
Tech's number one learn of
Danny Birchmore
Turville and Speicher. sec
ond-seeded in the tourney,
took Georgia's Birchmore
and Bailey in straight sets to
reach the finals
The Bulldogs top-seeded
tourney team of Shippey and
Holmes was up-ended by the
Jackets' Baxter and Sloane
Tech won the first set 6-3,
but Bill Shippey and Norm
Holmes bounced back to gain
the second 7-5.
But, Chris Baxter and
Chuck Sloane gained the fi
nals with a 7-5 mark in the
final set.
The Yellow Jackets' win in
the doubles broke a three year
Bulldog hold on the event.
Georgia's Bill Shippey and
Tony Ortiz won the doubles
crown last year
