far this spring.

Passing Game Fails
In Saturday’s Game
Georgia's last big scrimmage before Saturday's G-Day
game was disappointing, according to Coach Dooley
Coacn Vince Dooley said.
When you talk about un
known players who may be
starters in the fall, you must
talk about sophomores Four
of these seven were red-shirt-
ed last fall They were good
prospects but simply were not
ready to play "
Julian Smiley is a 60. 203-
pound fullback from Savan
nah who all spring has been
drawing high praise from his
coaches The business major,
who played quarterback as
well as fullback and comer-
back in high school, is pres-
enUy running behind Bruce
Kemp
Head defensive Coach Er-
skine Russell, who has
watched Smiley run through
his troops in recent scrim
mages. said. "Smiley is a
detepUve runner in that he
has speed that you don't real
ize unUI he gets in the open
He is a daylight runner That
is. he runs to open field if his
hole is closed
"He is not a line buster but
has had the knack of breaking
for longer runs than any other
back this spring He has had a
tendency to fumble but is
making progress in this area
He has a real good chance to
play a lot of football'
Quarterback Jack Montgo
mery will end a good spring
Saturday by leading one of the
teams in the annual G-Day
game against a Mike Cavan-
led squad Montgomery had
played safety at Georgia until
this spring The Moultrie na
tive is a 6-0, 190-pounder ma
joring in business
Dooley said, ■ Montgomery
has great balance and is the
best running quarterback we
have He is like Smiley in that
Kemp and Cavan are number
one until someone beats them
out. They are pushing these
two. and some people think
they are already better."
two other top offensive
sophomores are left tackle
Tom Nash and right guard
For this last scrimmage
the cards were stacked; the
first unit offense ran against
the second unit defense and
the second unit offense ran
against the first unit defense
'We didn't get a true pic
ture because of this stack
ing,” said Coach Dooley
As usual, the running of
Julian Smiley was the high
light of the scrimmage The
big redshirt fullback from
Savannah ran over the defen
ses just as he has all spring
I'm not entirely satisfied
with the team, Dooley went
on "I'm pleased at the fact
that they work hard and try
as hard as they can. "
Physically, were not
comparable to last year's
team "
The passing game took
some raps from Coach Dool
ey.
"It was very poor," he stat
ed. The protection has un
proved but the throwing and
catching were poor '
Improved protection for
the passer is a good sign,
since this year s offensive line
will be inexperienced Only
Tommy Lyons and Wayne
Byrd return as starters
"The defense was lapsing
on the big plays,” Dooley
went on. "For example. Trav
Paine went 30 yards on a draw-
play once They weren't put
ting out total effort late in the
game "
Spring practice ends this
Saturday with the G-Day
game A highlight of the game
will be the duel between op
posing quarterbacks Mike
Cavan and Jack Montgomery
Cole
H<wb
Royce Smith Dooley said.
“Both of these two are physi
cally strong But they are be
hind in experience, which
makes you a little hesitant
about playing them in this
league Both have been run
ning first string, and, if they
continue to improve, they will
be fine football players before
they leave here "
Nash, a 64. 230-pounder
from Washington, was an All-
American selection in high
school Nash, a true sopho
more. is a pre-law student
who is in the Honors Program
and was recently elected to
the Senate
Defensively. Chip Wisdom
and Tommy Couch, who Dool
ey rates as perhaps the two
best young linebackers we
have had since we have been
at Georgia.” have been out
standing
Wisdom, a true sopbo-
more from Atlanta, is 6-2 and
weighgs 206 pounds Russell
said of the psychology major
who had a B average last
quarter. "Wisdom is a very
intelUgent football player and
that is why he has done so well
although he is inexperienced
He has the physical attributes
for the job. "
Couch. 6-2. 206 pounds, is a
business major from Decatur
Dooley said. "Couch is physi
cally strong and is an excel
lent tackier. If he and Wisdom
can learn to direct the de
fense They will be good foot
ball player*. ”
Phil Sullivan, a true sopho
more. has been battling for
one of three open defensive
backfiekl posts this spring
The Mobile. Ala . native who
is 6-3 and weighs 186 pounds,
is majoring in business and
had a B. average last quarter
Defensive backfield Coach
Billy Kinard said of Sullivan.
"He is a big. strong kid and is
as good a prospect as anyone
we have had in a while He has
all the tools, speed, quick
feet, size and strength He
likes to play "
