ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP
Our Bulldogs have added
another championship trophy
to the case, and it's a wel
come addiuon
Coach Howell T. Hollis's
golfers stunned the confer
ence by winning the SEC
crown last week They did in
the best way possible - com
ing from behind at home
Allen Miller and Lloyd Lie-
bler showed that they're
champions too, shooting some
hot rounds to lead the Bull
dogs victory Miller came in
second with a score of 214.
only two strokes behind that
of Vaughn Moise of LSU. He
tied Steve Melnyk, the pre
tournament favorite, for the
second spot and in doing so
gained a large measure of
revenge It was only two
weeks ago that Georgia lost to
Florida in a dual match, and
it was largely because Melnyk
whipped Miller Miller played
the worst round of his college
career in that one. shooting a
79 Melnyk beat him with a 72
and that was largely responsi
ble for the Gators' close 17-10
win.
When the chips were down,
however. Miller really came
through. He played three con
sistent rounds of golf in the
SEC tournament, shooting a
71, 71 and 72. It's been said
that a true champion is con
sistent, and that fits Miller
perfectly.
Freshman Lloyd Liebler
played a large part in Geor
gia's victory. shooUng a 68 on
the final day And don't forget
the others, men like Joe
Kunes, Lynn Lott, Pete Davi
son and Terry Diehl They all
came through in grand style,
giving Georgia another cham
pionship trophy
Credit must be given to
Coach Hollis also He now has
won 12 league titles, the most
of any coach, and Georgia is
tied for LSfJ in the number of
team titles won over the
years.
Georgia has another
chance at another champion
ship trophy this weekend, this
time in tennis. Although Flor
ida must be rated the over
whelming favorite. Coach
Magill's netters are a definite
threat Georgia probably has
the second best team in the
conference, but they can
prove they're number one this
weekend in Baton Rouge.
Competition will be fierce
however Florida is expected
to be seeded number one in
every singles and doubles
match, and that will make
them mighty tough to overco
me.
Revenge will be a motive
for the racketeers. As most
people know, the only defeat
suffered by them this year
was a humiliating 90 white
wash by the Gators Danny
Birchmore and Bill Shippey
extended their opponents,
Armi Neeley and Jamie Pres
sley. to three tough sets
Should they be able to win in
Baton Rouge they will gain
some valuable points.
The number one doubles
team of Bill Shippey and
Norm Holmes has a better
than even chance to win. They
also extended the team of
Neelev-Beeland to three sets,
but did it twice, last fall in the
Southern Invitational Colle
giate and in the dual match
with the Gators
With a little bit of luck and
a lot of good, hard effort, the
netmen may bring home an
other trophy for Georgia
