BILL DAUBY POPS FLORIDA'S CARLOS ALVAREZ AFTER PASS
Darby Looked Good In Holding Flanker To One Catch
Darby Effort Tops
On Gator Alvarez
Jy TOM PRIOR
Staff Writer
"Bill Darbv plaved a great
game against Florida. Our
defense contained Florida's
offense real well, and Bill
Darby had a lot to do with it.
Darby was great covering
Carlos Alverez."
Darby, Georgia's star de
fensive halfback, has played
many fine games this season,
but his effort against Florida
was outstanding, as defensive
backfield coach Billy Kinard
pointed out
“I think we played good
enough to win. Our defense
plaved especiallv well." said
Darby.
DARBY’S main concern
now is Auburn "Auburn has a
better material than any team
we've faced this season.
"They have good receivers,
good backs and a tough de
fense. To beat them we’ll
have to play our best game
yet. and we ll have to play
without mistakes."
Darby, of Walhalla, S C.,
was both an outstanding ath
lete and scholar in high
school.
At Walhalla High. Darby
was an all-conference player
in football, basketball base
ball and track.
IN FOOTBALL, he was
named as an all-stater and an
honorable mention high
school All-American. He was
further honored by being se
lected to play in the Carolina
Shrine Bowl
In track. Darby was an all-
state broad jumper and
sprinter He showed excellent
speed by running the 100 in
9.9.
Darby was also outstanding
scholastically. He had an
overall average of 95 in high
school
In 1967, Darby came to
Georgia on a full scholarship
and became the first-string
cornerback and plaeekieker
for the freshman team.
LAST YF.AR Darby was
Georgia's No. 1 kickoff man
and second-string defensive
back playing behind Mark
Stewart.
Darby earned a starting
defensive back position this
year and has played consist
ently well for the Dogs
This season. Darby has in
tercepted two passes, one
against South Carolina and
one against Ole Miss
The high point of Darby's
season, however, was his fine
play against Florida
Darby covered Florida's
top star Alvarez, one of the
nation's top receivers, better
on a man-to-man basis than
all other SEC defenders have
done double-covering Alvar
ez.
The highly-acclaimed Al
varez caught onlv three
passes against Georgia, while
he's averaged nine recep
tions against other teams,
and he caught onlv one
pass while covered bv Darbv

"He's been under a lot of

Competition Tougher Weekly
By TOM GIFFEN
Assistant Sports Editor
"The competition has been
getting tougher each week,
and this weekend will be no
exception," according to Bull

Auburn has been paced by a
returning, experienced defen

lineup; however, the offense
has jelled giving the Plains
men one of the most potent
one-two punches in the South
eastern Conference.

The Auburn defensive line
finds Neal Detimering and
Durward Sauls at ends and
David Campbell, reputed to
be the finest defensive tackle
ever for the Plainsmen, and
Vince Bowling or Keith Green

The backs are Don Webb,

Whiie the offensive line is
developing on experience

carrying the big offensive
load are Mickey Zofko, Wal

The Plainsmen have one of
the best place kickers in the
SEC in John Riley who leads
Auburn scoring with 48 points.
