The triumphant Georgia
Bulldogs fresh from an unprec
edented second straight road
trip sweep, travel to Florida for
a Saturday afternoon clash
which will be regonally tele
vised
This is probably the first
Umo in the history of Georgia
basketball that we have won
two consecutive road trips,
said coach Ken Hosemond. aft
er the Dogs had defeated
Mississippi St 79-76. Monday
night
Georgia had previously
knocked off Auburn and Vander
bill in enemy territory, and on
this latest trip Ole Miss and
Mississippi St fell
NKXT ON the road is Flori
da. and they hold a peculiar
record against Hosemond s
forces
There are three places in
the SEC where I've never been
able to win Koseond moaned
They are Kentucky Tennes
see and Florida
This could be the year to
knock off the Gators They are
5-10 for the season. 2-5 in the
conference, but they are always
tough at home, and they will be
itchng for a win after having
dropped two straight heart
breakers on the road
All-SEC performer Andy
Owens has been the ma'nstay
for the Gators all season, but he
has received little scoring sup
port from his teammates
MEANWHILE the Bulldogs
continue to look stronger. They
admittedly did not play one of
their best games against Mis
sissippi State, but they were
still able to pull out the tight
win And the mark of a good
team is being able to win on the
road without playing a good
game
Critics of the Dogs have
pointed all season to a lack of
scoring punch from the for
wards, but the last game should
put those thoughts to a rest.
Cauthen Westbrook hit 10-15
from the field and scored 22
points to lead the team in stor
my against State Herb White
pqiped in 16 points in the sec
ond half to help guide the Dogs
to victory winding up with 19
for the game
Mississippi State put a tight
zone defense around Bob Lien-
hard. Georgia's leading scorer
for the year, holding him to
only 12 points, but Westbrook
responded to the occasion by
hitting the outside shots that
state sacrificed
Jerry Epling scored 16 in
Monday's contest, and it
pushed his three-year varsity
total to 997 He should join the
select Bulldog l.OOO-point club

in the Florida game Epling
continuing his hot shooting, hit
ting 7-11 from outside to take up
the slack when Lanny Taylor
could not work himself open for
the good shots.
LIENHARD, Chairman of
the Board of Georgia's 1000- £•
point club, has been drawing jit-
more than his share of opposing jiji
defense, but the result has re- in
sulted in beautifully balanced $
scoring for Georgia :j|:
In the twin victories over the
weekend. Epling had 43 points.
I.ienhard 35. Westbrook 30. :j|
Taylor 30 and White 24 This
scoring depth is a coach's
dream
The strong play was not lim- jij
ited to the starting five The
entire team saw action in the :j:
Mississippi game, most of it
when the going was rough. Bar-
rv Cohen came in in the Missis- jij
sippi State game to settle down jij
the offense, and he did a com- jij
mendable job over the last 10 j:j:
minutes
THE BULLDOGS are now jij:
7-1 in the SEC, and they remain jiji
a mere half-game behind front- jiji
running Kentucky.
Georgia also received votes i'i
in both the AP and UPI polls jij
this week, although it was not |
enough to rank them in the Top §j
20 Had they won a couple of the jij
close early season games, they jij
would certainly be riding high iji
in the ratings.
There is still a long confer- iji
ence schedule left, and the iji
Bulldogs must continue to win ijij
and hope that someone will help ijij
them out by upsetting Kentuc- jij:
ky. jjjj
For Kentucky's record to be jij:
important, however. Georgia jiji
must jump Florida's trickv g
hurdle. Things have been going jiji
remarkably well so far on jour- jiji
neys from Athens, and the team jii-
has some old debts with the ijij
Gators that they intend to pay. *:

The SEC and Georgia
" : 1
There s something kind of nice about
SEC basketball And it's probably true that
it s not realized until you become a winner
in SEC basketball
You see basketball is the top crowd-at-
tracter of tlie few SEC sports in which all
the teams play all their fellow members
twice a season
This is not to say that the SEC is lousy in
all other sports. But there often are sched
ule weaknesses in many of the other sports.
Like in football Most teams just play six
league foes, and some just face five And at
the same time this is not to say that SEC
basketball is the country’s finest. For cer
tainly the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 10
and Ivy League play a better brand of ball
Maybe this something kind of nice' can
be described in the realm of closeness The
conference now has 10 members, since Tu-
lane and Georgia Tech have dropped out in
recent years. There are seven states repre
sented by these 10. with three of these
states having two participanLs each. These
are Auburn. Alabama. Ole Miss. Mississip
pi State. Tennessee and Vanderbilt. And
then there are the four border schools. Ken
tucky on the north. Florida on the south.
Georgia on the east, and Louisiana state on
the west.
But it's more than just proximity in loca
tion There is also proximity in type of uni
versity. Exclude Vanderbilt because of its
smallness and better-qualified students and
Kentucky because of its almost-Northern
atmosphere, and you get eight very-much-
alike Southern universities And perhaps
the league with just these eight would be
better adapted for tournaments and sched
uling than it is now. But then again, the pre
sent 10-team group has made basketball
kind of nice.
And closeness and winning have made it
4
i
kind ot nice. Each team plays each oth^f
team once at home and once on the road. Sb
in January and February you can usually
count on at least four SEC games every
Monday and Saturday nights. And these :j:
games every Monday and Saturday nights' £
are being played in new. spacious fieldh<xN- M "#
es. Mississippi State is the only one of the 10
that is still playing in a small, cramped.
falling-down gynnasium. but they are now :£
making plans for a new. sparkling arena #
too. ■;"$
Closeness and winning And yes. Georgia • jij
is winning in SEC basketball Winning so jjjj
much in fact that they are in second place £
and every day looking more and more litfe
the only team with a chance of catching na J «;jj
tionally second-ranked Kentucky “** _j:j
They have just returned from winning : :j:j
two games on a swing through Mississippi, ijij
making their league chart 7-1 They have'" ijij
now won all their SEC road games, and this :jj:
is imperative if you want to take all the j:j:
marbles. It has been a long time since a jij:
Dog team has won four straight league road jij:
encounters And this team will be shooting jiji
for its fifth in Gainesville. Fla.. Saturday at jij:
1 p.m. before a TV audience. It will also be jjjj
shooting for Ken Rosemond s first win ever £
on the Florida court.
This team will be having more and more ijij
to shoot for each week. This team — with ijij
the All-American excellence of Bob Lie*. iji
hard, the accurate, gunning hands of Jerjy,. jij:
Epling and Lanny Taylor, the driving hustle jij:
of Herb White, the defensive finese of iji
Cauthen Westbrook, the ball-handling mag- iji
nificence of Barry Cohen, and the timejy, j£
relief of a strong bench — is a good one.
Ah. the close SEC. Change that to the jiji
close SEC and basketball. Better yet. since j£
things are beginning to change, correct tl)at , jiji
one more time Make it the close SEC ^nd Si
basketball and Georgia. ijij
