One of the newest special
interest clubs on campus this
year is the Chess Club. The club
was organized last summer and
met in the lounge area of the
Union until this fall. Now the
club meets in room 405 in
Memorial Hall, Wednesday
night at 7
This fall marks the height of
the club s activity, including
co-sponsoring the University
Chess Tournament and defeat
ing the Athens Chess Club by
the score of 4-2. The club has
challenged the chess team
from C.eoreia State.
IN THK CHESS tournament
held this week. Steve Hunt and
Charles Dale took top honors,
with John McIntosh. Paul Ba-
tra, Edward de Jaegher. Earl
Hutchins, Dan Coutcher and
Qutubuddin Khalid all tying for
third place All except Khalid
will compete later in the week
for third and fourth place
The four winners will com
prise the Georgia Chess team
and compete in the region tour
nament to be held at Georgia
Tech in February. The region
tournament is sponsored by
the Association of College Un
ions International
ALTHOUGH NOT recog
nized as a “club" by the Stu
dent Senate, the organization is
a subcommittee of the Universi
ty Union According to Steve
Hunt, Chess Club president, the
club will probably be recog
nized by next fall
The m tin problem of the
club is getting interested stu
dents to attend the meetings
and become active members
When the club was organized
this summer there was a good
re^wnse to the notices on cam
pus. Unfortunately, of the 30
names on the interested list the
club can claim only two dozen
active members. Hunt said
“WE INVITE everyone who
is interested, whatever thefr
playing ability, to attend the
meetings The more advanced
a person is, of course, the more
interesting it is. but with time
we could have a good group,
said Hunt
Because .1 is not recognized
by the Senate, the club cannot
appropriate money from the
student activities fund.
Through the University Urn**
the club did acquire some chesa
sets and rlnHts for competition *
Plans for the future include
organizing a chess league foj
intercollegiate matches.

Now, the purpose ol this hype is to get you to talk your folks into
financing a little getaway to the mountains. Read on.
Being from the South, when you think of skiing, you naturally think
of wafer skiing. Forget it. This is snow skiing. The best. Ah, but you
say that that means Vermont or Colorado or some other foreign
place like that? Nope.
We mean Beech Mountain, N.C. Yeah, North Carolina. Beech has
the highest slopes east of the Rockies, and that includes Vermont.
And Beech has ten different slopes, from beginner to advanced,
with lifts to service each one. There are cozy places where you can
get some good chow and something to drink, or maybe just sit
around and get warm.
Beech also has a lot of single people all over the mountain, all
winter long. If you are male, that means that there are a significant
vice versa, if you can dig it. If you don’t know how to ski, we'll teach
you. If you don’t have any equipment, we'll rent it to you, cheap.
If you do have your own equipment, what are you waiting for?
So here's the pitch: Beech Mountain features a gift certificate which
entitles you to two days of skiing. The package includes your lilt
tees and complete equipment rental. All for under thirty dollars.
(A lot less if you have your own skis and stuff.) You'll also get a
jacket patch and a button which bears the catchy, ad game phrase
“One Good Beechkommer Deserves Another." Wear it proudly and
all that jive. Even when you figure up your own food, lodging and
transportation, it's still cheaper than the Bahamas. Now, cut the
coupon out, write your name on it, etc., and mail it to us. We'll
shoot through with some brochures and stuff that will explain
what's happening.
Bahamas? P.C.? Lauderdale? Tell those scenes to kiss otf. This
winter, go to Beech Mountain and ski. End of ad.
that improper storage
between wearings may
result in the growth of
bacteria on the lenses.
This is a sure cause of eye
irritation and could seri
ously endanger vision.
| O.K., send me all those brochures and things so I can ponder this skiing business in my heart of hearts.
