This, his first book, is a ludi

man like Nixon is "really"

does McGinnis make a value

petency. rather, he presents a
matter-of-fact, believable and
hilarious story of how a team of
talented men and television can
dupe a country into making a
psychological purchase of a

for his ideas.
AT THE BEGINNING, de
Nixon told his staff that the

What sort of people grow
orchids? Little old ladies, who
are half crazy anyway, and ef-
feminant men. of course. What
about an enlisted Navy man
growing orchids in an atomic
submarine under florescent
light’’ What about a University-
graduate student, who enjoys
camping, hiking, cave explor
ing and sailing - growing thir
ty varieties of orchids in his
spare time?
The graduate student is Bill
Lamp and he is working on his
masters degree in Botanical
Ecology. A graduate of Univer
sity of North Carolina. Bill has
been interested in orchids for
four years.
According to Lamp, orchids
are not has hard to grow as
some people think, the main
consideration being modifying
the climateof the area to meet
the requirements of the plant
UNLIKE EXPENSIVE or
chid corsages, the plants them
selves are very moderately
priced. The cheapest way to
purchase orchids is to buy them
when they are young or in the
seedling stage.
By buying the plants when
they are young, the grower has
longer to wait for a bloom, but
will save more than the pur
chase price. For the impatient
grower, plants can be pur
chased in the adult flowering
stage at a higher price.
The easier plant to grow in
this area is the Phalaenopsi
or Moth OrchiJ. These can be
grown in a dorm with a seran
wrap tent to block out some of
the sun and a pan of water next
to the pot to increase humidity.
Lamp was given his first
orchid plant at University of
North Carolina and became
interested in orchids as a hob
by.
IIE HAS PLANTS in various
stages of growth and he said
that it only takes him half an
hour a week to care for his
plants He estimated that if a
person had ten plants, it would
take only five minutes every
other day to tend to their needs
In Florida he has a Cattlrva
Aurantiaca. a plant with many-
red petals, in the seedling
stage, and it will cost him about
$50 to raise it to flowering adult
size. He estimates that he could
make $200 by rolling the flow
ers. but he plans to give the
plants away to interst others in
growing orchids
Orchids take from one to two
years to grow to flowering size
plants. One particular variety-
will produce several buds that
will bloom one at a time, one a
day until all have bloomed
Each flower will last about a
month with the entire plant will
be in bloom for two months or
longer
Lamp did say that orchids
do. in most cases, requid hu
midity.
ONE OF THE MOST com
mon mistakes made in growing
orchids is overwatering them
Most people think that since
orchids grow in tropical rainfo-
rrests that they should water
them accordingly. Lamp said
that this overabundance of
water will result in dead or
chids
Orchids are beautiful flow
ers. but they are used for sever
al purposes The bulbs are used
for shoe sole glue while the
flower is made into perfume In
the Tropics, the pseudobulb is
cooked and eaten for the starch
content
In the comic strip Brenda
Star." there is a character Bas
il St. John, who grows or is
trying to grow a black orchd
This I^mp said, is impossible
The only black orchid grown is
actually dark purple, or a com
bination of purple and red
FLORISTS CREATE black
orchids by placing the cut stem
into a black dye or ink solution
The plants take the liquid into
their system and the flower
appears to be black Another
method used by florists is to
spray the flower black These
flowers never wilt and. except
for occasional flaking, they
stay very black
Lamp does not advise trying
to dig up wild orchids and culti
vating them in captivity. He did
succeed in replanting a wild
orchid from this area, though
He dug up soil around the plant
and put the entire diggings into
a pot The plant grew, but ac
cording to Lamp. Men who
have grown orchids for years
have’t been able to make wild
orchids grow in captivity I just
just lucky. "
In his expeditions into the
woods. Lamp has found three
species of orchids in a 20 mile
radius of Athens. These flowers
are quite different from those
he grows The wild orchids
have flowers that are only one
quarter of an inch across.
There is an organization for
orchid hunters called the
.American Orchid Society
THE SOCIETY de
scribed as " a scientific or hor
ticultural corporation, for non
profit purposes, to promote,
carry on and aid in every possi
ble way the development, im
provement and per kinds, but not by
orchids of all kins, but not by
way of limitation, the importa
tion and improvement by cult-
vation and hybridization of ex
otic orchids and the preserva
tion and perpetuation of native
orchids.
Bill I^iinp is not the only one
in the University community
interested in orchids Dr Wai
ter M Sanders, an ecologist, is
also an avid orchid hunter He
and I^amp would like to organ
ize an orchid club in Athens
The club would be for those
who are interested in orchids
and those who actually- grow
them. The dues would cover the
paper work of a bulletin so as to
make the club as inexpensive as
possible Interest personssh-
soukl contact Dr. Sanders or I
Bill l<amp
