Dogs Recapture SEC Lead

The Mets, the Jets, the
Chiefs. Richard Nixon and now
the Georgia Bulldogs
That's right In case you've
been out of the country the pest
few days and didn't hear the
new s Ken Rosemond s basket
ball powerhouse is back on top
of the SKC. ami from the looks
of things they have no intention
of changing position
It all happened Saturday,
when the Bulldogs whipped
Florida in Gainesville. Fla on
Saturday afternoon. 68-64 ami

Vanderbilt pasted powerful
Kentucky 89-81
THE DAY'S action ended
with (**orgia on top of the con*
ferenee with an 8-1 mark and
Kentucky faltering behind with
ga 7 2 slate
Situations seem to be re
versed How does this sound''
Kentucky now seems to be the
only team with a chance to haul
down powerful Georgia The
Wildcats must continue to win
and hope that someone can
upset the high-flying Bulldogs
Until Saturday things were the
other way around What a dif
ferenee a day makes'
Georgia's victory over the
stubborn Gators was a stereo
type of it's other conference
wins so far this year a close
win, but a win. nonetheless
THE GATORS played most
of the game as if their 5-10 re
cord was a bit lofty Their shots
from the held had the accuracy
of mortar lobs and a rebound
was cause for celebration
Still the Bulldogs had trou
ble pulling away from them,
primarily due to shoddy floor
play Turnovers were merciful-
riy omitted from the official sta
tistics. but the Bulldogs had
their share An indication
comes in the fact that Georgia
out-rebounded the Gators. 42-
27. yet had mm* less shots from
the floor
(ieorgia loped to a 31-22 half
time advantage and the region-
gal television audience began to
yawn as a runaway seemed cer
tain
The Gators suddenly came
alive, though, after the Dogs
had built a 14-point lead early in
the final half They began to hit
shots from all over the court,
ami their only real ballplayer.
Andy Owens, came out of his
doldrums to cut the (ieorgia
margin to three
GEORGIA, however, had an
added luxury, a bench In came
Barry Cohen and Cort Nagle
and the Bulldogs hung on for
gdear life, proving themselves
once again to be one of the coo
lest pressure* clubs anywhere in
anv sport
The victory gave Georgian
an unheard of 5-0 record in con
ference road games With only
gfour more road games on the
docket, the Dogs are assured of
a winning record in SEC play
away from home and the name
of the game is winning on the
road, as Kentucky learned Sat
urday night
Bob Lienhard led Georgia
with 20 points and 19 rebounds
against Florida His three-vear
point total, the highest in (ieor
gia history, is now 1438
Jerry Epling added 10 points
to push his career total to 1007
making him only the fifth
player in Bulldogannals to
crack the thousand mark in a
three-year varsity career
Cauthen Westbrook added
another star to his collection of
defensive laurels. He had the
uneviable job of guarding Ow
ens. but Owens had the unenvi
able job of being guarded by
Westbrook.
Westbrook rendered the
Florida star completely help
less in the first half I'miting
him to eight points. Owens was
finally benched, reportedly
because of a bad ankle, but he
made a recovery that would
have put Oral Roberts to
shame, after Westbrook got in
foul trouble and left the game
Herb White and Lanny Tay
lor also contributed to the* Bull
dog cause, scoring 12 and 10
points respectively. White also
helped to dominate the boards.
COHEN, fast becoming ac
customed to situations such as
•he tail-end of the Florida
game, hit three of four free
throws and added a clinching
layup, as he ran the Bulldogs
offense in the late stages of the
game
And. last, but certainly not
least, was the performance of
Nagle, who came out of oblivi
on to turn in a fine job after
Westbrook left the game wth
four personals. Nagle scored
seven points, and three of those
came on free throws in the cru
cial final minutes of the game
What does it all add up to?
Well, it adds up to years of re
building by Joel Eaves. Ken
Rosemond and assistants Fat
**•'' hens and John Guthrie, and
p"‘,it of hard work on the part
of the team
Georgia suffered through 17
consecutive losing seasons, un
til 1968 — an unrealrecoe.
This year's team will surely be
winner number three in a row
BUT improvement on this
team can't be measured mere
ly over the last 17 years or the
last thme. Compare this team
with the one that challenged
Vanderbilt a month ago. com
ing off two dismal losses in the
Quaker City Tournament and
