The Beautiful Sport
Gymnastics - a sport of skilled precision,
brute strength and patterned beautv And few
sports can match it in these three areas
if you have been to a University of Georgia
gymnastics meet, you know about these
things But if you haven't and decide to go
you'll be very glad you did You will almost
become hypnotized bv the beautv of the
sport
THIS HYPNOTIZING element is present
in all six events of a gymnastic meet
The floor exercise is the only event in
which any signficant amount of tumbling is
used The gymnast goes through a routine
that is as graceful as any movement any ath
lete could ever perform But it's not all
grace, for to be able to go into and come bark
out of 180-degree splits requires both
strength and flexibility
Most experts have long regarded the side
horse as the hardest gymnastic event to mas
ter And certainly this is the case for al
though you see these leg circling and cutting
moves before you. you cannot imagine how
the athlete is able to do what he is doing
IF BRUTE STRENGTH can dominate any
one event, then it is the still rings Although
body swing is also important here, the brute
will win this one. But this is really not accur
ate since all gymnasts are brutes So the
winner will have to be a super-brute
The long horse event is unique in that it is
not a routine but instead, includes a running
start, a handstand on a chest-high bench and
an upright landing. It is an event of flowing,
flipping speed
The parallel bars' routine is somewhat
similar to that of the still rmgs Strength
again is vital, but lightning quickness and
cat-like balance are just as imperative
MEET AGAIN IN KY.
UK. ..«>t w.uiiUIi Util l» lilt MiCt‘1 S last but
probably most spectacular and dangerous
event With his hands wrapped tightly around
the bar, the gymnast swings through the air
with a series of releases and catches
BUT WHAT kind of athlete can endure
such events?
Well at the University of Georgia, he is an
athlete who only stands 5-foot-8 and only
weights about 150 pounds Evidently, gym
nasts are small Thev must be to liave the
flexibility, balance and quickness that they
need Although these men are small, their
backs, shoulders, chests and arms are as
knotted with popping muscles as those of any
other type of collegiate athlete.
Add to this description the fact that most
University of Georgia gymnasts are from the
Atlanta and Decatur areas For only two of
the squad are from out of state, and of those
from Georgia, only four are outside the
Atlanta and Decatur areas. This is because,
as Coach Lee Cunningham says, outside of
these two areas, gymnastics in Georgia has
not reached too many plateaus
BUT WHY would these athletes be drawn
to such a sport?
One Georgia gymnast. Ron Murphree.
says it is because gymnasics is a sport of free
dom For as you are going through your rou
tine. you get a feeling of complete separation
from the rest of the world. It is just you and
the equipment vou are working with Along
the same lines, it is an individual sport, since
no one is going through your routine with you
And you get out of it exactly what you put into
it.
And that is why an athlete wants to per
form in a sport of skilled precision, brute
strength and patterned beauty
So call it gymnastics and color it beautiful

Schedule Even for Dogs, Cats

The Southeastern Confer
ence basketball race is at its
halfway point, and for the first
, time in SEC history. Georgia
finds itself at the top of the
heap at this stage of the season.
Georgia Coach Ken Rose-
mond is naturally pleased with
the performance of his Bull
dogs, but he hasn't relaxed yet.
• a "I’ve told our boys to just
concentrate on winning our own
games and let everthing else
just fall into place. Rosemond
said.
KENTUCKY is tied with the
Bulldogs with an 8-1 conference
mark after beating Auburn 84-
83 Monday night Rosemond is
trying to get his men to worry
completely on their own play,
and not continually keep one
eve on Kentucky.
I still believe that Kentucky
Will be beaten again They have
already had several close calls,
plus their loss to Vanderbilt.
Rosemond contended
The schedules of the two
front-runners are almost equal-
ALL-STARS LATER
Ruggers Scrimmage
The University of Georgia rugby team held a scrimmage last
Sunday for the oenefit of new members
CVCaptain Graham Holloway was pleased with the scrim
mage. and he said that all of the new performers should be able
to help out the team.
The team's last match was against Ataltna and the first
team came away with a 27-0 win
The team scored seven tries (touchdowns) in the maten
Holloway scored twice, and Billy Thompson. Pet Glass. Cliff
Hawley. Martin Chitwood and Bob Ruth each added one score
Holloway also kicked three extra point conversions.
The remaining matches for the quarter consist of games at
Clemson. S.C.. on Feb 7. the All-State Trial on Feb 14. the In
terstate Quadrangle Tournament in Birmingham. Ala., on Feb
22. and home meets with Davidson on Feb 28 and Clemson on
Mar 7
The Interstate Tournament will put the best players from
four state areas. Florida. Alabama. Tennessee, and
Georgia South Carolina This is the first tournament of this
type in the South and perhaps the nation
The All-State trial will determine the players who will make
the All-Star squad
ly difficult Kentucky has five
of their remaining nine confer
ence games on the road, while
five of Georgia's nine are in the
Coliseum. Kentucky may have
an advantage, though, because
the all-important battle be
tween the two leaders will be in
Icxington. Ky.
THIS SATURDAY night,
while the Bulldogs host a dan
gerous Vanderbilt outfit. Ken
tucky will be on the road to bat
tle Ole Miss. 3-6 in the confer
ence and 7-9 overall.
On Monday. Feb 9. Georgia
will travel to Tuscaloosa to
meet fast-improving Alabama
The Crimson Tide had lost 22
consecutive conference games,
but they now own back-to-back
wins over Mississippi State and
Ole Miss, both in convincing
style
At the same time Kentucky
will be visiting Mississippi
Stale The cellar-dwelling Ma
roons and ninth-place Tide
should not pose serious threats
to the two front-runners, but all
of the SEC teams are tough a*
home, and everybody is gun
ning for Kentucky and Georgia
now
ON FEB. 14. the Bulldogs
meet a stern test when they have
to travel into the extremely
unfriendly confines of Knox
ville to duel Tennessee. The
Vols are experiencing an off-
year. but their record still stands
at a respectable 11-7. and it has
been many-a-moon since Geor
gia won up there
Kentucky should take it easy
that night. They will be at home
to play one of the worst Florida
teams ever. The 5-11 Gators
should be easy pickings in Lex
ington.
Then, on Monday night. Feb
16. comes the game for all the
marbles. The Dogs and Cats
clash for the second time this
year, and the winner should be
in good shape for a champion
ship The two teams' first
meeting in Athens will
be remembered for years to
come, as the Wildcats scraped
out a 72-71 win
KENTUCKY Ioms at home
about as oiten as the sun eclips
es. and there just so happens to
be an eclipse coming up
After that battle, the sched
ule definitely favors the Dogs
They play LSU in Baton Rouge
on Feb 18 whie Kentucky en
joys an open date, but on Satur
day. Feb 21. Kentucky must
travel to LSU. while Georgia is
at home to play Ole Miss.
Kentucky then closes out the
season by travelling to Ala
bama. hosting Vanderbilt and
Auburn, and treking to Tenn
essee to close the season
Georgia has it a bit easier,
playing Mississippi State. Flor
ida and LSU. all at home.
Truth is stranger than fic
tion. and there is absolutely no
way to predict exactly what the
outcome of this wild race will
be Georgia and Kentucky
might both wind up as also-
rans.
But it certainly is nice for
Georgia fans to finally find out
what it's like to come into the
home stretch of a conference
basketball race with a genuine
concern in the outcome.
